Margot Robbie is set to star in a brand new version of Attack of the 50 Foot Woman, with Tim Burton directing.

According to The InSneider, Robbie will not only play the lead role but will also help produce the movie through her LuckyChap production company. Warner Bros. is backing the project, which has quietly been moving forward after months of silence.

The film is based on the original Attack of the 50 Foot Woman, a sci-fi B-movie that first hit theaters in 1958. Back then, Allison Hayes played the main role of Nancy Archer, a wealthy woman who returns from a mysterious alien encounter transformed into a giant. The film became a cult classic thanks to its wild premise and over-the-top special effects.

It told the story of Nancy, who grows to enormous size after her encounter with a UFO, and ends up using her new strength to take revenge on her unfaithful husband and those who wronged her. The movie’s campy style and old-school effects earned it a place in pop culture history, inspiring parodies, homages, and even a 1993 TV remake starring Daryl Hannah.

Now, Tim Burton plans to give the story a fresh look. Known for his dark and quirky filmmaking style, Burton seems like a natural fit to reinvent the story. It’s an interesting shift for the director, who has recently worked on films like Dumbo and Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, as well as the Netflix series Wednesday.

The idea of remaking Attack of the 50 Foot Woman was first announced back in February 2024. At that time, Gillian Flynn, who wrote Gone Girl, was attached to write the screenplay. Flynn’s first draft reportedly laid the foundation for the story, but she won’t be returning to finish the script.

According to The InSneider, Flynn is too busy with other projects, so Warner Bros. is now looking for a new writer to continue her work.

Robbie’s involvement isn’t much of a surprise. After the massive success of Barbie, Warner Bros. is eager to work with her again. In Barbie, she not only starred but also produced through LuckyChap, which could be why the studio was so quick to bring her on board for this unusual sci-fi project.

The InSneider’s sources say that Robbie will play the main role of the giant woman, taking over from Allison Hayes’ original character. The story will still follow a woman who grows into a towering figure after an alien encounter, turning her into a literal force of nature.

Burton had recently hinted that he was working on an animated movie, but it looks like this live-action project might happen first. If all goes well with the script, Attack of the 50 Foot Woman could end up being one of his most unique studio films in years.

For now, there’s no official release date, but with Robbie on board, things are starting to feel a lot more real.
