Bill Cosby is speaking out after the sudden death of Malcolm-Jamal Warner, his long-time TV son from “The Cosby Show.” Warner, known to many as Theo Huxtable, passed away on Monday after drowning in Costa Rica. He was just 54 years old.

According to ABC News, Warner got caught in a strong ocean current while swimming during a family vacation.

Local police said he died from asphyxia. Despite people on the beach trying to help him, and rescue teams arriving quickly, Warner couldn’t be saved. His body was later recovered and identified by Costa Rican authorities.

In a conversation with ABC News, Cosby looked back on his memories with Warner. He remembered him as someone who always worked hard and took his job seriously. “He was always a great studier, and I enjoyed working with him very much,” Cosby said.

Cosby shared that his bond with Warner stayed strong even after their hit show ended. “Malcolm calls here regularly,” Cosby explained, saying their relationship felt like the one he had with his own grandfather. Cosby also mentioned that the character of Theo was inspired by his own son, Ennis, who passed away years ago.

Cosby added more about Warner’s dedication as an actor. “He was very professional. He always knew his part… He always knew his lines, and he always knew where to go,” Cosby remembered.

Warner first became famous playing Theo Huxtable for eight seasons, a role that earned him an Emmy nomination. After that, his career kept going strong. He acted in many TV shows, like “Sons of Anarchy” and “The Resident,” and in 2015, he won a Grammy for Best Traditional R&B Performance.

In his later years, Warner worked on a podcast that explored the Black experience in America, showing he was passionate about using his voice beyond acting.

Since Warner’s death, many stars have shared their grief. Actress Tracee Ellis Ross said Warner “made the world a brighter place.” Jamie Foxx also posted a message, writing he was “speechless” and ended his tribute with “Rest in power, my brother.”

Warner’s life and career were full of achievements. Born in Jersey City, New Jersey, in 1970, his name came from two important figures: civil rights leader Malcolm X and jazz musician Ahmad Jamal.

Over the years, Warner acted in many popular shows, from “Suits” and “Dexter” to “Community” and “The Michael J. Fox Show.”

He even directed episodes of “The Cosby Show” and “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.” In 2011, he starred with Tracee Ellis Ross in the BET show “Reed Between the Lines.” He also worked behind the camera on projects like a video about HIV awareness, which featured big names like Magic Johnson and Arsenio Hall.

Now, as fans and friends remember him, Bill Cosby’s words show just how much Warner meant to those who knew him, both on and off the screen.
