Superman is flying high at the box office, and it’s not slowing down yet. As of July 22, 2025, the movie has made $253.2 million in the United States and Canada, and another $173.1 million overseas. That brings its total worldwide earnings to $426.3 million so far.

The film is now on track to make somewhere between $370 million and $405 million domestically by the end of its run. It’s also expected to pass the $500 million mark worldwide this weekend.

That’s a big deal, especially since earlier reports said the movie needed to cross $500 million just to break even. But to be seen as a real hit, it’ll have to reach closer to $700 million.

Before its release, people had high hopes. Based on how well the first full trailer performed online, some thought the film could earn more than $1 billion worldwide. Several reports also said it would need over $500 million to make back its costs, which are said to be around $400 million for both making and marketing the film.

At one point, it looked like Superman might have a huge opening weekend. Projections went as high as $175 million in North America, which would’ve beaten Batman v Superman’s $166 million debut.

But studio expectations were more cautious, aiming for something between $90 million and $125 million. In the end, Superman made $125 million during its opening weekend. That made it the biggest debut ever for a solo Superman movie and the second-highest for any film featuring the character, behind Batman v Superman.

Leading up to its release, the buzz was strong. On July 10, the film pulled in $2.8 million just from Tuesday previews. Including Thursday previews and special Amazon Prime screenings, that total went up to $22.5 million.

That was the best preview performance for any movie in 2025 and also a record for anything directed by James Gunn. It even beat the preview numbers Warner Bros. saw with Barbie.

The film’s first full day in theaters brought in $56.5 million, making it the second-biggest opening day of the year, behind only A Minecraft Movie. Internationally, the film added another $95 million in its first weekend, bringing its global total to $220 million at the time. Its biggest markets outside North America included the UK, Mexico, China, Brazil, Australia, and France. But it didn’t perform as well as expected in some countries, especially China, where it opened in fourth place.

Even so, Superman managed to stay strong. In its second weekend, it made $57 million and kept the number one spot at the box office. That drop from opening weekend—around 54%, was actually better than other superhero movies this year. Captain America: Brave New World dropped by 68%, and Thunderbolts fell 56%.

The reviews have also helped the film’s momentum. On Rotten Tomatoes, 84% of critics gave it a thumbs-up, with many praising the heart and tone of the movie. The site’s summary reads: “Pulling off the heroic feat of fleshing out a dynamic new world while putting its champion’s big, beating heart front and center, this Superman flies high as a Man of Tomorrow grounded in the here and now.” Over on Metacritic, the score sits at 68 out of 100, which means most reviews were generally positive.

So while Superman hasn’t taken the world by storm just yet, it’s flying steady. If the film can keep up its pace, it still has a shot at becoming a box office success. For now, it’s safe to say this Superman is holding his own.
