Paul Thomas Anderson is back with a new action thriller called One Battle After Another, set to hit theaters on September 26, 2025, in the United States and Canada through Warner Bros. Pictures.

The story centers on a group of former revolutionaries who come together after 16 years to save the daughter of one of their own when a dangerous enemy returns. The cast includes big names like Leonardo DiCaprio playing Bob Ferguson, Sean Penn as Col. Steven J. Lockjaw, and Benicio del Toro as Sensei Sergio, alongside Regina Hall, Teyana Taylor, and newcomer Chase Infiniti.

The film is inspired by Thomas Pynchon’s 1990 novel Vineland, which Anderson has adapted before with Inherent Vice. Filming began early 2024 in California and later moved to various locations including Sacramento, the Anza-Borrego Desert, and El Paso, Texas. The shoot used 35mm VistaVision cameras, and Michael Bauman worked as the cinematographer, teaming up again with Anderson after their work on Licorice Pizza.

According to reports, the movie’s budget is over $140 million, which is notably high for Anderson, but Warner Bros. is confident because of DiCaprio’s strong box-office track record.

In an unusual move for Anderson, the film went through test screenings starting in January 2025. This led to some edits, cutting about eight to ten minutes from the original cut. The connection to Vineland was officially confirmed in March 2025 when Warner Bros. released the first teaser.

The movie also marks the last collaboration with Adam Somner, Anderson’s longtime assistant director and producer, who sadly passed away in November 2024. Composer Jonny Greenwood returns once again to provide the music score.

A full trailer for One Battle After Another has recently been released and already won a Golden Trailer Award for its music score.

The film will also be Anderson’s first to be shown in IMAX theaters. Sources say the movie will need to earn between $260 and $300 million to be profitable.

Warner Bros. moved the release date from August to late September, possibly to better position it for awards season.
