‘The Legend of Vox Machina’ Ending with Season 5 as ‘The Mighty Nein’ Sets November Premiere
Critical Role fans are in for some big updates. At San Diego Comic-Con, the group announced that their animated fantasy series The Legend of Vox Machina has been renewed for a fifth and final season. That’s not all, Season 4 of the show is coming too, but fans will have to wait until 2026 to see it on Prime Video.
While the wait might be long, there’s something else to get excited about. Critical Role’s next animated series, The Mighty Nein, is officially set to premiere on November 19, 2025. Both shows are set in the world of Exandria, a fantasy setting created by Matthew Mercer, the Dungeon Master behind Critical Role.

The Legend of Vox Machina brings to life the characters from Critical Role’s first campaign. The voice cast includes the original players: Laura Bailey, Taliesin Jaffe, Ashley Johnson, Liam O’Brien, Marisha Ray, Sam Riegel, Travis Willingham, and Mercer himself. Bailey voices Vex, a half-elf ranger.
Her twin brother Vax is played by O’Brien. Willingham voices Grog, the group’s barbarian. Johnson is the gnome cleric Pike, Jaffe plays the gunslinger Percy, Ray is Keyleth the druid, and Riegel plays Scanlan, a bard who’s equal parts music and mischief. Mercer, as usual, covers a long list of other characters in the story.
Season 3 ended on a big note, with Vox Machina finally defeating the Chroma Conclave, a group of evil dragons. After that, the team went their separate ways. But in the final moments of the season, the show teased the return of a massive villain, Vecna, a dangerous undead foe.
According to the creators, Season 4 will show the group scattered across the world, facing personal challenges. But they’ll have to reunite when an even greater threat puts the whole world in danger.
Sam Riegel and Travis Willingham shared how meaningful this journey has been. “It’s so rare for any television series to get to tell a complete story, beginning to end, exactly as it was envisioned,” they said. “We’re so grateful to our fans, the critters, our partners at Prime Video, and the original Kickstarter backers for bringing this show to life, and turning the numbskulls of Vox Machina into animation legends.”
Fans and critics have praised The Legend of Vox Machina for its animation, voice acting, action, and emotional moments. The series is based on Critical Role’s first livestreamed Dungeons & Dragons campaign, which aired in 2015.
As Vox Machina prepares to wrap up, the spotlight turns to The Mighty Nein. This new series is based on Critical Role’s second campaign, which also took place in the same fantasy world but followed a different group of characters and stories.
In this show, Laura Bailey plays Jester, Willingham voices Fjord, Riegel is Nott the Brave, Ray plays Beauregard, Jaffe is Mollymauk, and Johnson returns as Yasha. Mercer also plays many supporting characters again.
The story follows a group of misfits and outsiders who don’t really get along at first. But when a magical relic called The Beacon ends up in the wrong hands, they have to come together to save the world.
According to the show’s description, “The Mighty Nein follows a group of fugitives and outcasts, bound by secrets and scars. But when a powerful arcane relic known as ‘The Beacon’ falls into dangerous hands, they must learn to work together to save the realm and stop reality itself from unraveling.”
Some big names are joining the cast as guest stars, including Mark Strong, Alan Cumming, Tim McGraw, Anika Noni Rose, Ming-Na Wen, Auli’i Cravalho, Rahul Kohli, Robbie Daymond, and Jonathan Frakes.
The original Mighty Nein campaign ran for 141 episodes and more than 550 hours. It was streamed weekly on Twitch and YouTube, eventually moving fully under Critical Role Productions.
During the campaign, the group tackled major conflicts between two powerful nations, fought against ancient threats, and tried to fix a world on the edge of chaos. Since then, Critical Role has returned to these characters a few times in specials like The Mighty Nein Reunited and a live show called Echoes of the Solstice.
The animated series The Mighty Nein was first announced in January 2023 and will premiere on Prime Video in late 2025.
All this news came directly from Critical Role’s panel at San Diego Comic-Con and official announcements from the group and Prime Video.
