It’s been a long time since we last saw Jason Voorhees on screen, but the wait is finally over. At San Diego Comic-Con, fans got their first official look at Sweet Revenge, a brand-new short project that brings Jason back, and it’s already getting people talking.

The project comes from Jason Universe, and it’s being described as a “short-form vignette” which basically means a short, focused story, that will be the centerpiece of the franchise’s big 45th anniversary campaign.

The trailer was shown during the panel and gave fans a quick but intense look at what’s coming. Sweet Revenge officially premieres on August 13, 2025, and it promises to bring all the classic blood-soaked horror you’d expect from Jason.

This new project is sponsored by Angry Orchard, and according to Jason Universe, fans should get ready for a “chilling weekend in the woods filled with blood-soaked surprises only Jason can deliver.” So yes, it sounds like classic Friday the 13th vibes with a modern twist.

Sweet Revenge is directed by Mike P. Nelson, the same filmmaker behind the Wrong Turn reboot. He also just wrapped filming on the Silent Night, Deadly Night reboot for Cineverse and Bloody Disgusting. For Nelson, this new Jason story is a dream come true.

In a statement, he said, “I am so grateful that the team at Horror, Inc. saw something in Sweet Revenge and wanted it as a part of the Jason Voorhees story! And to think 30 years ago I was trying to secretly watch these movies on VHS when no one was looking. To have the opportunity to write and direct one of these stories is surreal – not to mention having an amazing team led by Chad Villella and Brianna Lee Johnson help me bring it to life! Not only is the vignette a new take on the beloved IP, it is a comforting, gory hug, reminding us why we fell in love with these movies. Much gruesome fun awaits you!”

Marc Toberoff from Friday 13th LLC also shared his thoughts on why now is the perfect time for this kind of project. “Jason has always been a force in pop culture, and the 45th anniversary felt like the perfect moment to do something truly unexpected. Partnering with Horror, Inc. and Angry Orchard who share our passion has opened up a new way to engage fans. It’s exciting to see the franchise evolve with such creativity while staying true to what makes Jason iconic.”

Sheri Conn, the Chief Marketing Officer at Horror, Inc., added her own praise for the new take. “We were beyond excited when Mike Nelson came on board and Angry Orchard sponsored production to help us bring this to life in a wickedly unexpected way. Even in a short vignette, Nelson will masterfully capture our shared vision–honoring the heritage of the franchise while delivering something fresh and thrilling for a new generation.”

Sweet Revenge isn’t just a fun standalone story. It’s also part of a larger push from Jason Universe to bring the character back in a big way.

In addition to this short film, they’re also involved in the upcoming Peacock and A24 TV series Crystal Lake. That show will serve as a prequel to the original Friday the 13th movies and just recently began filming this summer.

After years of legal drama and delays around the rights to the franchise, it finally feels like Jason Voorhees is back where he belongs, lurking in the woods, machete in hand, ready to terrify a whole new generation of horror fans.

More updates on Sweet Revenge and the rest of the Jason Universe will likely roll out as the anniversary gets closer. For now, fans are just glad the hockey mask is back.
