‘3 Body Problem’ Powers Up Season 2 with Two Major New Cast Additions

Netflix’s sci-fi hit 3 Body Problem is adding new faces for its second season. According to Deadline, Claudia Doumit and Ellie De Lange are officially joining the cast as series regulars. The show, created by David Benioff, D.B. Weiss, and Alexander Woo, is getting ready for its next chapter after a successful first season.

Doumit, best known for her role as Victoria Neuman in The Boys, will play a character named Captain Van Rijn. Ellie De Lange, who appeared in Wolf Hall and The Serpent, will take on the role of Ayla.

3 Body Problem is based on the popular sci-fi book series Remembrance of Earth’s Past by Chinese author Cixin Liu. The story begins in 1960s China with a young woman whose life-changing decision sets off events that stretch across time and space.

The series follows a group of scientists and a determined detective as they try to stop a threat that could wipe out humanity. In season 2, the alien invasion grows closer, and people on Earth, and beyond start to prepare.

The show made a big impact with its first season. It stayed at number one on Netflix’s global Top 10 for three weeks and remained on the list for seven weeks total. It also reached the Top 10 in 93 different countries. Even the soundtrack made waves—three songs ended up on Billboard’s Top TV Songs chart, with Lana Del Rey’s “Video Games” landing in the top spot.

3 Body Problem picked up six Primetime Emmy nominations, including one for Outstanding Drama Series. In May 2024, Netflix renewed the show for both a second and third season. The first season had a huge budget too, reportedly $20 million per episode, which adds up to $160 million in total.

Doumit has more projects on the way, including the M3GAN spinoff SOULM8TE, produced by Atomic Monster and Blumhouse. She’s represented by Cultivate Entertainment and Goodman, Genow, Schenkman et al. De Lange will also appear in Netflix’s upcoming series Run Away, based on a novel by Harlan Coben. She is repped by Henneman Agency and The Artists Partnership.

The first season of 3 Body Problem featured a large ensemble cast that included Jovan Adepo, John Bradley, Liam Cunningham, Eiza González, Jess Hong, Benedict Wong, and Jonathan Pryce, among others.

With production on season 2 now underway and two new cast members stepping in, the story is clearly getting bigger. The next season promises to dive deeper into the looming alien threat and the future of life as we know it.
