[Watch] The Final Trailer for ‘The Conjuring: Last Rites’ Hits Maximum Creepy
“The Conjuring: Last Rites” is ready to give fans one final scare. This new movie is the fourth and likely last chapter in the main “Conjuring” series. It hits theaters on September 5, 2025, and New Line Cinema just dropped a fresh trailer that’s sure to send chills down your spine.
The story picks up in 1986 and brings back church-going ghost hunters Lorraine and Ed Warren, played by Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson. Directed by Michael Chaves, who also helmed the previous film, “The Devil Made Me Do It,” this movie follows the Warrens as they face a terrifying evil tied to an old case from their early days.
The trailer has a strong 1980s horror vibe, reminding many of classic films like “Poltergeist” by Tobe Hooper and Steven Spielberg.
Since the first “Conjuring” came out in 2013, the series has grown into a huge franchise known as the Conjuring Universe. This world has also spun off hit movies like “Annabelle” and “The Nun.” Even “The Curse of La Llarona” from 2019, while not officially part of the Conjuring Universe, fits into the same creepy setting.
“The Conjuring: Last Rites” is written by Ian Goldberg, Richard Naing, and David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick. The story is based on the real-life investigations of the Warrens, created with input from James Wan, who helped co-write the original story and is also producing alongside Peter Safran.
Besides Farmiga and Wilson, the cast includes Mia Tomlinson as Judy Warren, Ed and Lorraine’s daughter, and Ben Hardy as Tony Spera, Judy’s boyfriend.
Before the last movie came out, director Michael Chaves shared in an interview with Empire magazine that he was excited about the future of the series, saying, “What [The Devil Made Me Do It] hopefully does is open up this new chapter for the Warrens. This has a very unique ending to The Conjuring films. I would be excited to see where it could go from here.” Farmiga also expressed her interest in continuing, mentioning, “Oh my God, I’d love to [continue]. It’s interesting, we have to up the fear in each one. Demonology is already so high-pitched and operatic.”
Reports from October 2022 confirmed that the fourth film was in development. By early 2024, Chaves was officially back as director, and new writers Goldberg and Naing worked on the script alongside Johnson-McGoldrick.
Filming for “Last Rites” took place in London from September to November 2024. The movie features a new composer, Benjamin Wallfisch, replacing Joseph Bishara, who scored the first three films. Wallfisch had previously worked on “Annabelle: Creation,” another film in the Conjuring Universe.
Fans can expect “The Conjuring: Last Rites” to deliver classic scares and a fitting conclusion to the Warrens’ story while still leaving the door open for more stories in this haunted world. The film will be in theaters on September 5, 2025.
