Lee Isaac Chung in Talks to Direct Margot Robbie’s ‘Ocean’s Eleven’ Prequel
There’s news that Lee Isaac Chung, the filmmaker behind the Oscar-nominated movie Minari, might be stepping in to direct the Ocean’s Eleven prequel. The film is being produced by Warner Bros. Pictures and LuckyChap Entertainment, Margot Robbie’s production company.
Like most Ocean’s projects, details about the story are being kept tightly under wraps. The film is still in early stages, and no actors have officially signed on yet. The screenplay, written by Carrie Solomon, is based on characters originally created by George Clayton Johnson and Jack Golden Russell.
Back in May 2022, it was announced that a prequel set in 1960s Europe was in the works. This prequel isn’t a reboot but will fit within the same world as the original Ocean’s Eleven movies. Margot Robbie is set to star and produce the film.
Initially, Jay Roach was attached to direct, with Carrie Solomon writing the script. Roach and Tom Ackerley were also expected to produce alongside Robbie. The project is a joint effort between Warner Bros., LuckyChap, and Village Roadshow Pictures.
Shortly after the announcement, Ryan Gosling was reported to be in early talks to co-star with Robbie. In December 2023, it was revealed that Robbie and Gosling would be playing the parents of Danny and Debbie Ocean, characters originally played by George Clooney and Sandra Bullock.
Production was planned to start in spring 2023 but got pushed back due to scheduling conflicts with the cast. While nothing is set in stone, the possibility of Lee Isaac Chung directing adds a fresh new voice to this exciting Ocean’s chapter.
