HBO’s Highly Polarizing Hit To End After 3 Seasons
And Just Like That… is coming to an end. HBO Max confirmed that the series will wrap up after its current third season, which is airing now.
The season will close with a special two-part finale. According to Deadline, showrunner Michael Patrick King told the cast about the decision on Thursday.
In a statement released Friday, King said, “And just like that… the ongoing storytelling of the Sex and the City universe is coming to an end. While I was writing the last episode of And Just Like That… season 3, it became clear to me that this might be a wonderful place to stop. Along with Sarah Jessica Parker, Casey Bloys and Sarah Aubrey, we decided to end the popular series this year with a two-part finale and extended the original series order from 10 episodes to 12. SJP and I held off announcing the news until now because we didn’t want the word ‘final’ to overshadow the fun of watching the season.
“It’s with great gratitude we thank all the viewers who have let these characters into their homes and their hearts over these many years.” King said.
The show premiered in December 2021 as a continuation of the iconic Sex and the City series created by Darren Star. It brought back Carrie Bradshaw, played by Sarah Jessica Parker, along with Cynthia Nixon as Miranda Hobbes and Kristin Davis as Charlotte York. The new chapter followed their romantic and personal journeys in midlife, set once again in New York City.
Over its three seasons, the series revisited Carrie’s life after the sudden loss of her husband Mr. Big, explored Miranda’s new relationships, and followed Charlotte as she balanced her family life with personal goals.
The latest season shows Carrie moving forward from her past romance with Aidan, Miranda exploring different paths in love, and Charlotte juggling motherhood and career challenges.
While the series began with strong numbers and brought in many new HBO Max subscribers, viewership has dropped since its debut. According to Samba TV, the season 3 premiere drew 429,000 households, down from 463,000 in season 2. The show has also sparked plenty of debate, with fans and critics split on whether it lives up to the original.
King developed And Just Like That… with a team of executive producers including Parker, Davis, Nixon, John Melfi, Julie Rottenberg and Elisa Zuritsky. The final season also stars Mehcad Brooks, Jonathan Cake, Logan Marshall-Green, Dolly Wells, Sarita Choudhury, Nicole Ari Parker, David Eigenberg, Evan Handler, and more familiar faces from the series.
The two-part finale will bring this chapter of the Sex and the City story to a close, marking the end of an era for Carrie, Miranda, and Charlotte, this time, for good.
