The upcoming movie Mortal Kombat II is set to hit theaters on October 24 of this year. Directed by Simon McQuoid and written by Jeremy Slater, this film is a follow-up to the 2021 Mortal Kombat movie.

It continues the story based on the popular fighting game series created by Ed Boon and John Tobias. This will be the fourth movie in the Mortal Kombat film series, bringing back many familiar faces like Jessica McNamee, Josh Lawson, Ludi Lin, and others. New actors joining the cast include Karl Urban, Adeline Rudolph, and Tati Gabrielle.

After the first Mortal Kombat movie came out in April 2021, the team behind it, producer Todd Garner, writer Greg Russo, and director Simon McQuoid, started planning what would come next. They talked about making standalone movies for characters like Johnny Cage and Bi-Han, as well as a direct sequel. By 2022, Warner Bros. officially approved the sequel, with Jeremy Slater writing the script and McQuoid returning to direct.

Filming for Mortal Kombat II began in June 2023 in Australia, specifically at Village Roadshow Studios in Gold Coast, Queensland. However, production was paused in July due to the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike. Once the strike ended, filming picked up again in November and wrapped up by late January 2024. Stephen F. Windon worked as the cinematographer for the film.

Recently, Collider shared an exclusive close-up image of Noob Saibot, one of the fan-favorite characters, showing off his classic look with empty eyes that stay true to the original video game. The final design for Noob Saibot in the movie draws a lot from Mortal Kombat 1, especially the Khaos Reigns expansion. This version of Saibot combines shiny armor with the traditional Lin Kuei ninja outfit.

Simon McQuoid revealed some details about how the filmmakers brought Noob Saibot’s shadowy look to life. “To translate his distinctive ‘shadow wraith’ look onto film, we drew most of our inspiration from the recent version of the game. Cappi had the brilliant idea of creating unique materials and finishes that would reflect the light while always being true to Bi-Han’s singular idea of being a shadow. His body was made of low-gloss textured black rubber under-skin, while his armour was organic in style and featured a dark grey pearlescent reflective finish. The shadow clone within him is a different character, so we needed a different costume and color, but they shared materials, ensuring his unique look was clearly separated from his shadow clone while always being born from the same character.”

The movie is shaping up to be a strong continuation of the franchise, with a focus on staying true to the source material while adding fresh visual elements. Fans can look forward to seeing Noob Saibot and other fighters brought to life with detailed costumes and effects. Warner Bros. Pictures is set to release Mortal Kombat II in theaters across the United States in October, so fans have some time to get ready for another round of epic battles.
