A new survival thriller called Eden is set to hit theaters this year, and it’s already gaining attention. Directed by Ron Howard and written by Noah Pink, the movie tells the true story of European settlers on Floreana Island, part of Ecuador’s Galápagos Islands. The film stars Jude Law, Ana de Armas, Vanessa Kirby, Sydney Sweeney, and Daniel Brühl, among others.

The story begins in 1929, when Dr. Friedrich Ritter and his wife Dora leave Germany, rejecting what they see as the shallow values of their society. They hope to find peace on Floreana Island. Friedrich wants to write his manifesto, and Dora tries to heal from multiple sclerosis through meditation. But their peaceful life is quickly interrupted.

Soon, Margret and Heinz Wittmer arrive. They are hardworking settlers who try to make a life on the island. Then comes Eloise Bosquet de Wagner Wehrhorn, a self-proclaimed Baroness.

She arrives with two lovers, a servant, and grand plans to build a luxury hotel. The settlers face harsh weather, wild animals, and a lack of basic comforts. But the hardest challenge is dealing with each other, especially as tensions rise and trust breaks down.

Jude Law plays Dr. Friedrich Ritter, while Vanessa Kirby takes the role of his wife, Dora. Daniel Brühl and Sydney Sweeney play the Wittmers, and Ana de Armas stars as the Baroness. Other cast members include Richard Roxburgh and Felix Kammerer.

The film first premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 7, 2024. It was released in Germany on April 3, 2025, and will come to U.S. theaters on August 22, 2025. Vertical Pictures is handling the U.S. release. Recently, the official trailer was released, giving fans a first look at the dramatic story and beautiful, yet dangerous, island setting.

The making of Eden began in late 2023. Ron Howard announced he would direct in October 2022, with casting starting soon after. Initially, the film was called Origin of Species. Early casting included Alicia Vikander and Daisy Edgar-Jones, but both later left due to scheduling conflicts and the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike. Vanessa Kirby and Sydney Sweeney were brought on to replace them. Hans Zimmer, a famous composer, was set to create the music for the film, adding to the excitement.

While the movie is beautifully shot and features strong performances, the reviews have been mixed. On Rotten Tomatoes, it holds a 57% rating from 35 critics, averaging 6.4 out of 10. Metacritic scores it 60 out of 100, which means critics feel the film is just okay, with some good parts but also weaknesses.

In the film, the struggle to survive isn’t just about fighting nature. It’s also about the complicated relationships and dangers people bring with them. As the settlers try to live together, things get tense, with secrets, betrayal, and danger adding to the drama.

Eden promises to be a gripping survival story with strong acting and beautiful scenery. The trailer, now available, shows the harsh beauty of Floreana Island and hints at the tough challenges the characters face. Fans of survival dramas and true stories will likely find something to enjoy when it arrives in theaters later this year.
