‘Superstore’ Star Passes Away at 83 — Fans and Co-Stars Pay Tribute
Jon Miyahara, the actor best known for playing Brett on all six seasons of NBC’s Superstore, has died at the age of 83. His cause of death has not been revealed.
The news was confirmed by Miyahara’s Superstore co-star Colton Dunn, who played Garrett on the workplace comedy. In a heartfelt Instagram post, Dunn remembered his friend as someone who could make an impact without saying a word. “John was a really awesome guy and as a performer could speak volumes with just a look,” Dunn wrote. “He was such a memorable part of the Cloud 9 team. It was an honor to know him and work with him. I was lucky enough to meet some of his family and my thoughts are with them. Rest in Peace John.”
Dunn’s tribute quickly drew responses from other members of the Superstore family. Kelly Stables, who played Kelly, commented, “Oh man! He was always so sweet.” Irene White, known for her role as Carol, added, “What an incredible man.” Michael Bunin, who portrayed Jeff, also shared his sadness: “I’m so sad to hear this news. Many fun days and many fun conversations. Very nice guy.”
Miyahara appeared in 105 out of the show’s 113 episodes, starting from the very first episode in 2015 and remaining until the series finale in 2021. His character Brett became a fan favorite for his quiet yet expressive presence in the store.
One of Brett’s most memorable storylines came at the end of Season 2, when a tornado struck the Cloud 9 store. Viewers were led to believe Brett had been swept away in the storm, and the following season began with his co-workers holding a memorial service for him. The scene included a hilariously awkward performance of Radiohead’s “Creep” by Sandra, one of the show’s most endearing characters.
Although Brett rarely spoke, Miyahara’s ability to convey humor and emotion with just a glance or small gesture made him stand out in a cast full of strong comedic talents. Fans often noted how his subtle facial expressions could steal a scene, turning him into one of the show’s most unexpected stars.
Superstore, created by Justin Spitzer, ran for six seasons and followed the lives of employees working at the fictional big-box retailer Cloud 9. The show tackled workplace issues with humor and heart, and Miyahara’s Brett became an essential part of the ensemble’s charm.
Tributes from fans and co-stars continue to pour in on social media, with many remembering Miyahara not only for his comedic timing but also for his warmth and kindness off-screen.
Colton Dunn summed up what many in the Superstore cast and crew felt about Miyahara: “He was such a memorable part of the Cloud 9 team. It was an honor to know him and work with him.”
