Since its release on Netflix in late June, KPop Demon Hunters has quickly become a viral hit. The movie, produced by Sony Pictures Animation, is a musical fantasy about a K-pop girl group called Huntr/x. What makes them special is that the three members live double lives as demon hunters. Their mission gets complicated when a rival boy band, the Saja Boys, turns out to be demons themselves.

The film has been climbing the streaming charts, sometimes even hitting the top spots. Songs from the movie like “Your Idol” and “Golden” have become hits on music charts, sparking conversations about possible Oscar nominations. Thanks to strong word of mouth and its viral nature, KPop Demon Hunters recently made it onto Netflix’s Top 10 Most Popular list, ranking number 4 with an impressive 158.8 million views, according to streaming data.

Interestingly, KPop Demon Hunters is getting a rare theatrical release with a special sing-along event. Fandango’s showtimes show screenings set for August 23 and 24, but it’s not clear if this run will be extended. Tickets aren’t on sale yet, and the movie will only be shown in select theaters, making this a unique chance for fans to experience it on the big screen.

The movie is a 2025 American animated musical urban fantasy, directed by Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans. They co-wrote the screenplay with writers Danya Jimenez and Hannah McMechan, based on an original story by Kang.

The voice cast includes Arden Cho, Ahn Hyo-seop, May Hong, Ji-young Yoo, Yunjin Kim, Daniel Dae Kim, Ken Jeong, and Lee Byung-hun. The story centers around the K-pop group Huntr/x, who fight demons while navigating their music careers, facing off against the Saja Boys, a demon boy band.

KPop Demon Hunters is deeply inspired by Maggie Kang’s Korean heritage. She wanted to create a story that combines mythology, demonology, and K-pop culture. Production started at Sony Pictures Animation by early 2021, with animation handled by Sony Pictures Imageworks. The film’s look is influenced by concert lighting, music videos, editorial photography, anime, and Korean dramas. The soundtrack includes original songs by various artists and a score by Marcelo Zarvos.

Critics and audiences loved the film when it premiered on Netflix on June 20, 2025. The animation, visuals, voice acting, story, humor, emotional depth, and music all received praise. The soundtrack did very well too, hitting top ten spots on several music and streaming charts.

KPop Demon Hunters has proven to be more than just a fun movie, it’s a cultural phenomenon blending music, fantasy, and heartfelt storytelling in a way that’s connecting with viewers worldwide.
