Scarlet Witch’s MCU Comeback Puts Her in a Dark New Role with a Deadly Partner
Marvel is getting ready to unleash chaos on Disney+ with Marvel Zombies, a new animated miniseries that drops October 3, 2025. The show is based on the Marvel Comics series of the same name and spins out of the What If…? episode “What If… Zombies?!” from 2021. Zeb Wells created the series, Bryan Andrews is directing and serving as showrunner, and Wells is also the head writer.
The story takes place in an alternate version of the Marvel Cinematic Universe where a zombie virus has wiped out most of the heroes and villains fans know. The survivors are left to fight against infected versions of people they once trusted.
The show’s animation will match the style of What If…?, using a cel-shaded “2.5D” look that blends 3D models with lighting to make them appear hand-drawn. Stellar Creative Lab, the same team that worked on What If…?, is back to handle the visuals.
One character set to steal the spotlight is Elizabeth Olsen’s Wanda Maximoff, also known as Scarlet Witch. In this series, she’ll be called the Dead Queen, and she’s not just any zombie, she’s one of the most powerful forces in this universe. Fans already saw how dangerous she was in What If…?, when she managed to survive a battle with the Hulk. Her mix of chaos magic and undead hunger makes her nearly impossible to stop.
The Dead Queen won’t be ruling alone. Okoye will take on the role of a secondary villain, commanding an undead army under Wanda’s orders. According to Nexus Point News, viewers can also expect zombie versions of Ghost, Hawkeye, Abomination, Captain Marvel, and Captain America to appear in the series.
That’s not all. Nexus Point News also reports that Marvel Zombies will bring in characters like John Walker, Baron Zemo, Namor, Melina Vostokoff, Thor, Valkyrie, and Black Panther. Whether these names will show up as survivors or as part of the undead threat hasn’t been revealed.
Fans of the original What If…? zombie episode will also recognize Scott Lang’s talking head, which is confirmed to return. Other confirmed characters include Spider-Man, Thanos, and Blade Knight. Riri Williams, Kate Bishop, and Kamala Khan will also appear, sticking together as close friends in the middle of this zombie-filled nightmare.
The mix of characters means fans will get to see wild matchups and team-ups, with old allies turned into enemies and unlikely groups forced to fight side-by-side. And with the Scarlet Witch at the top of the undead food chain, the stakes are as high as they can get.
Disney+ has been leaning into animated Marvel projects lately, and Marvel Zombies looks like it will be one of the bloodiest and most chaotic yet. Fans won’t have to wait long to see which heroes make it out alive, and which ones end up joining Wanda’s army of the dead.
