Jimmy Kimmel has a backup plan if things get really bad with Donald Trump’s return to the White House. The late-night host, who has often criticized Trump during both of his terms, revealed on Sarah Silverman’s podcast that he already has a way out of the country if needed.

Silverman asked, “A lot of people I know are thinking about, where are they going to get citizenship?” Kimmel answered, “I did get Italian citizenship. I do have that.”

He didn’t hold back about his thoughts on Trump’s presidency, saying, “What’s going on is… as bad as you thought it was gonna be, it’s so much worse. It’s just unbelievable. I feel like it’s probably even worse than [Trump] would like it to be.”

The Italian news agency Ansa reported that Kimmel officially got Italian citizenship earlier this year. He proved his ancestry, as his maternal great-grandparents moved to New York from Naples after a massive earthquake hit their hometown, Ischia, in 1883. If Kimmel ever decided to move to Italy, he wouldn’t be alone. Other celebrities have considered leaving the U.S. after Trump returned to office.

Kimmel’s citizenship news comes after Trump reacted to the cancellation of The Late Show with Stephen Colbert on CBS. Trump didn’t stop there, he also suggested Kimmel might be next.

On TruthSocial last month, Trump wrote, “The word is, and it’s a strong word at that, Jimmy Kimmel is NEXT to go in the untalented Late Night Sweepstakes and, shortly thereafter, Fallon will be gone. These are people with absolutely NO TALENT, who were paid Millions of Dollars for, in all cases, destroying what used to be GREAT Television. It’s really good to see them go, and I hope I played a major part in it!”

Stephen Colbert responded during his monologue, calling out Trump directly. “How dare you sir?” he said. “Would an untalented man be able to compose the following satirical witticism?” Colbert then turned to another camera labeled “eloquence cam” and said bluntly, “Go f**** yourself.”

Kimmel’s Italian citizenship shows he is prepared for anything, while Colbert’s response highlights that late-night hosts are ready to fight back with sharp humor. The tension between these comedians and Trump continues to be a major story in entertainment and politics.
