Netflix Renews Hit Crime Thriller With 90% Audience Score for Season 2
Netflix has officially renewed the British crime thriller Dept. Q for a second season, only a few months after its debut on the platform. The series, created by Scott Frank and Chandni Lakhani, is based on the novels by Danish author Jussi Adler-Olsen and first premiered on May 29, 2025.
The news of the renewal was shared in August, and the creative team behind the show didn’t hold back their excitement.
In a joint statement, Qureshi and Manda Levin said, “We are raring to return to Carl Morck and his band of glorious misfits at ‘Dept. Q.’ Scott Frank brought us best-in-class storytelling and thrilled Netflix audiences worldwide. We can’t wait to see what Morck and the gang uncover in Season 2…. Edinburgh, we’re back.”
Andy Harries and Rob Bullock from Left Bank Pictures also reacted to the news. Bullock joked about what might come next, saying, “So, we are going downstairs to ‘Dept. Q’ for a second season. We at Left Bank Pictures nervously await what Scott has in store for his alter-ego Carl Morck, and the other enabling members of team do-lally. We salute Netflix’s courage to let them loose once again.”
Scott Frank, who serves as creator and showrunner, thanked the cast and crew with his trademark dry humor. “I’m grateful to the folks at Netflix, as well as our shining cast and crew, for once more risking their careers to enable my folly,” Frank said.
Executive producer Matthew Goode, who also stars in the series, added, “I’d like to thank Netflix for giving us the opportunity to further investigate Department Q’s storylines. We have a wonderful cast and crew, headed by our resident genius Scott Frank. I cannot wait to read what comes from his magic quill!”
Dept. Q follows the story of detective Carl Morck, played by Matthew Goode. Morck is a brilliant but emotionally damaged investigator who is forced to lead a new unit that works on old cold cases. At the start of the series, Morck has just returned to duty after a traumatic shooting left him badly injured, his partner James Hardy paralyzed, and another officer dead.
His colleagues see him as arrogant and difficult to work with, and he is forced to attend therapy as part of his recovery. Despite his personal struggles, Morck slowly begins to bond with his unconventional team in Department Q.
The show has quickly built a loyal audience since its release. On Rotten Tomatoes, Dept. Q holds an 87 percent approval rating from critics, with the consensus reading, “In a sea of generic crime dramas, Dept. Q stakes its claim amongst the thrilling, enthralling, and sublime thanks to a winning cast and veteran creative Scott Frank.” On Metacritic, the series scored a 69 out of 100, which reflects generally favorable reviews.
With its gripping storylines, strong performances, and a fan base that grew almost overnight, it’s no surprise Netflix decided to bring Dept. Q back for another season. The creative team has promised more dark mysteries, complex cases, and deeper looks into the lives of Morck and his troubled squad. Season 2 is officially on the way, and fans are already waiting to see where Department Q’s next investigation will lead.
