New Ranking Reveals the Best Wrestler-Turned-Actors
Over the past ten years, wrestlers have increasingly found their way into Hollywood. Big names like Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and John Cena are the most famous examples, but the path from wrestling ring to movie set has a long history.
Before them, Hulk Hogan showed it could be done, even if his Hollywood movies didn’t always work. Hogan, whose real name is Terry Bollea, dominated wrestling in the 1980s and opened doors for future stars.
Without him, there might not be a The Rock or Dwayne Johnson as a household name.
The Hollywood Reporter recently ranked the top 10 wrestlers who became actors, and while some big names didn’t make the list, there are plenty of honorable mentions.
These include Randy Orton, CM Punk, Mike “The Miz” Mizanin, Sasha Banks, Stone Cold Steve Austin, Becky Lynch, and others. WWE has long produced talent that can step into film and TV, from action-packed roles to comedic cameos.
Dave Bautista, known in wrestling as Batista, made a strong transition into acting. He impressed audiences as Drax in Guardians of the Galaxy. Bautista’s large size helped him in action roles, but he also slimmed down to 240 pounds to fit the part, showing he can adapt to Hollywood’s demands. “Though actors usually need to bulk up for certain roles, Bautista has slimmed down to fit in,” the source explains, highlighting his versatility. Bautista is currently ranked at number 1.
Following Bautista at number 2, Dwayne Johnson is probably the most successful wrestler-turned-actor. He has starred in countless blockbuster movies, from Fast & Furious to Black Adam. He is popular worldwide and almost everyone knows his face, but critics note that he has not yet earned widespread critical acclaim for acting. “Johnson has a killer work ethic, is an all-time great talker, and he knows his market,” the source says, emphasizing why he is a top box office draw.
John Cena at third spot has also made a name for himself in Hollywood. His acting is often polarizing, but he is fearless and willing to poke fun at himself. While Johnson dominates the big-screen business, Cena has proven he can hold his own, especially with roles in Peacemaker and family-friendly films.
Classic wrestlers like “Rowdy” Roddy Piper, Adam Copeland (Edge), Kevin Nash, and Hulk Hogan also made their mark in films and TV. Piper is remembered for his cult hit They Live, delivering the famous line: “I have come here to chew bubble gum and kick ass. And I’m all out of bubble gum.”
Copeland has taken serious acting roles in series like Vikings and Haven, showing he can move beyond his wrestling persona.
Other notable names include Paul Wight, known as Big Show, who starred in The Big Show Show, Jesse Ventura in Predator, and André the Giant in The Princess Bride. Each wrestler brought something unique to Hollywood, whether it was sheer size, charisma, or unforgettable presence.
The Hollywood Reporter’s list shows that wrestling can be a stepping stone to the big screen. From action heroes to comedic roles, wrestlers continue to find success in Hollywood, building on the foundation laid by the likes of Hulk Hogan. Wrestling may be the start, but for many, acting becomes the next championship.
