IGN recently gave fans a glimpse of a new R-rated thriller, The Long Walk, but the clip was so intense that the SDCC decided not to show it in full. The film is based on Stephen King’s novel and tells a story set in a dark future where the U.S. is ruled by a harsh regime.

Every year, teenage boys are forced into a walking contest that sounds simple, but it’s deadly. If a boy drops below three miles per hour for too long, he is killed. The walk continues until only one boy is left alive.

Cooper Hoffman stars as the lead, Raymond Garraty, while David Jonsson plays Peter McVries. Mark Hamill takes on the role of The Major, the man who controls the brutal contest. The cast also includes rising talents like Garrett Wareing, Joshua Odjick, Tut Nyuot, Charlie Plummer, Ben Wang, Roman Griffin Davis, Jordan Gonzalez, Judy Greer, Josh Hamilton, and Izabella Raven.

The journey to bring The Long Walk to the big screen has been long. Back in 1988, horror legend George A. Romero was linked to the project, but it never happened. In 2007, Frank Darabont, known for The Shawshank Redemption and The Mist, acquired the rights. He said he wanted to make a “small, personal version” and described it as “weird, existential and very contained.”

The project tried to move forward again in 2018 with New Line Cinema, with James Vanderbilt writing and producing. In 2019, director André Øvredal came on board, but that version also didn’t take off.

It wasn’t until November 2023 that the movie finally started moving. Lionsgate took over production, Francis Lawrence signed on as director, and JT Mollner wrote the final script. Casting began in mid-2024 with Hoffman and Jonsson, followed by the rest of the cast. Mollner even confirmed Garrett Wareing’s role on Twitter.

Filming began on July 24, 2024, in Winnipeg and wrapped up in mid-September. Jeremiah Fraites, from the band The Lumineers, composed the score, finishing it by March 2025.

The Long Walk isn’t just about survival—it’s about power, control, and how people react when pushed to their limits. With Francis Lawrence directing and a talented cast leading the way, the film promises to stay true to King’s original story while delivering intense thrills.
