Netflix’s biggest hit right now, KPop Demon Hunters, is taking the world by storm. The animated musical has become an unexpected cultural phenomenon, drawing millions of viewers and topping streaming charts.

With its huge success, fans have been eagerly talking about a potential sequel, and one of the directors, Maggie Kang, already has ideas about where the story could go next.

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Kang shared the creative challenges the team faced while making the first movie.

She explained that the movie was designed as “a non-origin origin story” about the demon-hunting team Huntr/x. Kang said, “We were trying to do a non-origin origin story with a concept that’s brand new to people. What is it about these girls that brought them into HUNTR/X and made them demon hunters? What is each of their backstory? How did they get chosen? What is that journey like?…[If a sequel happens,]Then we can reveal more of that backstory.”

Kang continued, “There was really not a space for the movie to show all that. So we really had to make these choices of what is essential to the story, and that is the information that we will show. I think that was one of the hardest things we kept getting asked: ‘Please show us this.’ ”

I think the audience is going to want to know this or that. We just made decisions to be like, ‘Nope, that is not essential to this story for this movie, and maybe that can be shown some other time.'”

Previous reports claimed that Netflix is now planning to expand KPop Demon Hunters into a larger franchise. The film’s popularity has sparked interest in multiple projects, including sequels and even a live-action remake.

The story follows three K-pop stars in Seoul whose music gives them the power to fight off demons. The film’s unique mix of music, action, and animation has captured a wide audience, appealing to both kids and adults.

During Netflix’s recent earnings call, co-CEO Ted Sarandos praised the film’s success, calling it “a phenomenal success out of the gate … And the fact that people are in love with this film and in love with the music from this film, that will keep it going for a long time. So we’re really thrilled. And now the next beat is, where does it go from here?”

Netflix is aiming to make KPop Demon Hunters its own version of Frozen, with plans to develop it into a full-fledged franchise.

According to sources, the company is exploring a stage musical, a live-action remake, a series adaptation, and two sequels to complete a trilogy. They are also considering a short film to bridge the story between the main movies, similar to how Disney used Frozen Fever to connect its first two films.

With the massive popularity of KPop Demon Hunters, it looks like this story is just getting started. Fans are already imagining the next chapter in the demon-hunting adventure, and Netflix seems ready to give them exactly what they want.

The combination of music, action, and animation has created a cultural hit that shows no signs of slowing down.
