Benedict Cumberbatch Teases Doctor Strange’s Role in Marvel’s ‘Avengers: Doomsday’
Marvel fans are counting the days until Avengers: Doomsday hits theaters, and Benedict Cumberbatch is adding even more mystery to the excitement.
The film, directed by the Russo brothers with a script from Michael Waldron and Stephen McFeely, is set to release in the United States on December 18, 2026. It will be followed by Avengers: Secret Wars in 2027.
This massive project will bring together some of the biggest teams in Marvel history. The Avengers will join forces with the Fantastic Four, the X-Men, the New Avengers, and the Wakandans to take on Doctor Doom. In a twist that already has fans buzzing, Robert Downey Jr. will play the villain.
A long list of returning heroes and legends has already been confirmed for the cast, but one name seemed to be missing for a while, Benedict Cumberbatch. At first, the actor denied that his character Doctor Strange would appear in the film.
But in January, during the Sundance Film Festival premiere of his new film The Thing With Feathers in Utah, he admitted to Business Insider that he had been mistaken.
“I got that wrong, I am in the next one,” Cumberbatch said when asked if Marvel had scolded him for his earlier comments in Variety.
His correction all but confirms that Doctor Strange will indeed return, which makes sense considering where Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness left his character. However, when Entertainment Tonight asked him again about his involvement, Cumberbatch stayed playful and mysterious. “I wonder… I wonder, I wonder… I wonder.”
The confirmed cast for Avengers: Doomsday is huge. It includes Chris Hemsworth, Vanessa Kirby, Anthony Mackie, Sebastian Stan, Letitia Wright, Paul Rudd, Wyatt Russell, Tenoch Huerta Mejía, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, Simu Liu, Florence Pugh, Kelsey Grammer, Lewis Pullman, Danny Ramirez, Joseph Quinn, David Harbour, Winston Duke, Hannah John-Kamen, Tom Hiddleston, Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, Alan Cumming, Rebecca Romijn, James Marsden, Channing Tatum, Pedro Pascal, and Robert Downey Jr.
The story will pick up fourteen months after the events of Thunderbolts in 2025, uniting Earth’s mightiest heroes and mutants against one of Marvel’s most feared villains.
With such a massive crossover event on the way, Cumberbatch’s teasing words are only fueling speculation about what role Doctor Strange will play in the fight against Doom.
