Simon Kinberg Teases His New ‘Star Wars’ Trilogy Will Be Inspired by Classic Favorites
Simon Kinberg, known for his work on the sci-fi drama series Invasion, is now taking the helm of a brand-new Star Wars trilogy. Hired in November 2024 to write and produce the films, Kinberg has shared some insight into how he plans to approach the franchise’s next chapter, according to an interview with ScreenRant’s Grant Hermanns.
While details about the trilogy remain tightly under wraps, Kinberg emphasized the importance of balancing epic storytelling with character-driven drama.
“I will say that I’ve learned so many things from working on Invasion, or honed a lot of things working on Invasion. And I think that the thing that I carry with me from Invasion into anything that I do, Star Wars included, would be finding a balance between big, epic science fiction storytelling with really intimate, dramatic character work,” he explained.
Although he couldn’t provide updates on the storyline, citing secrecy, Kinberg did reveal which past Star Wars projects inspire him.
He singled out The Empire Strikes Back and the Disney+ series Andor, praising their mix of personal stakes and large-scale sci-fi adventure. “My favorite of the Star Wars movies is Empire Strikes Back, and it’s because the balance between the epic and the intimate is so strong in that they’re such personal stories.”
“The stakes are really personal, and yet, obviously, there’s all kinds of great science fiction. I think Andor did an extraordinary job of that, as well. It was such an emotional, intense, personal show that also had, obviously, massive stakes, and politics, and all of that,” Kinberg said.
The new trilogy is part of the broader expansion of the Star Wars universe, which now spans films, TV series, and streaming projects. Fans have been eager for any updates, and Kinberg’s comments give a glimpse of a trilogy that could blend thrilling galactic battles with deeply personal character arcs.
From my perspective, it’s exciting to see a filmmaker so focused on combining epic storytelling with intimate character moments. This approach could make the next Star Wars films feel both grand and emotionally engaging. What do you think about Kinberg taking on the Star Wars trilogy? Share your thoughts in the comments.
