Netflix is getting ready to release a new Canadian miniseries called Wayward, created by Mae Martin. The show will hit the streaming platform on September 25, 2025, after premiering first at the Toronto International Film Festival.

The story takes place in a small town that seems nice on the surface but hides some very dark secrets.

At the center of it all is Tall Pines Academy, a place that claims to help troubled teens. In the first trailer, Toni Collette’s character Evelyn Wade welcomes everyone with a warm promise of peace and serenity at the academy.

But as her words play out, we start to see the truth, that the camp is not what it seems, and something far more sinister is going on behind closed doors.

Mae Martin plays Alex Dempsey, a local police officer who has just moved back to the town with his pregnant wife Laura, played by Sarah Gadon. They’re looking for a fresh start, but their new life quickly takes a turn as the mysteries of Tall Pines come to the surface.

The cast also includes Sydney Topliffe, Alyvia Alyn Lind, Brandon Jay McLaren, Tattiawna Jones, Isolde Ardies, Joshua Close, Patrick J. Adams, Patrick Gallagher, Gage Munroe, and Byron Mann. Toni Collette’s role as Evelyn seems set to be one of the most haunting in the show.

The series has been in the works since April 2023, when Netflix gave the green light for an eight-part drama from Mae Martin. Martin is not only starring in the show but also serving as showrunner and executive producer alongside Ryan Scott.

The production is a team effort from Objective Fiction, based in London and Los Angeles, and Sphere Media in Canada. Other executive producers include Ben Farrell, Hannah Mackay, Jennifer Kawaja, and Bruno Dubé.

When Martin first spoke about the series, they explained how important this project has been for them, saying it is a story they have “been dying to tell for years.” The show was originally called Tall Pines before the title was changed to Wayward.
