Emma Stone Admits at ‘Bugonia’ Premiere: She’s a True Believer in Aliens
Emma Stone surprised reporters at the Venice International Film Festival when she admitted she believes in aliens. The Oscar-winning actress was at a press conference on Thursday, August 28, promoting her new film Bugonia.
Stone, 36, spoke about the themes of the movie before sharing her personal thoughts. “Yes, I’m coming out with it: I believe in aliens,” she said.
She explained that she finds it hard to think humans are the only ones out there. “It’s a pretty narcissistic thing to think that we’re truly alone out here.”
At one point, she even joked with the crowd. “How do you know I’m not an alien?” she asked, before adding that the full answer was too complicated for a press conference.
Bugonia, directed by Yorgos Lanthimos, is about two men who kidnap a powerful CEO, played by Stone, because they believe she’s an alien.

The film is based on the 2003 South Korean sci-fi comedy Save the Green Planet! Stone has worked with Lanthimos several times before, including in The Favourite, Poor Things, and Kinds of Kindness.
The actress also shared some personal reflections during the press event. She spoke about how people often confuse the public version of her with her real self. “There’s me, and then there’s ‘me,’ here,” she said. “I separate the two in my mind a little bit, which I maybe need to do less, but I think as a coping mechanism.”
She said social media and public life can make people feel like they don’t have control over how they are seen. “Everybody sort of deals with that now. There’s a lot of self-reflection for everyone… We all can relate to that feeling of someone thinking they know you.”
Fans have also been talking about Stone’s new look. Earlier this year, she debuted a short pixie cut, which came from a scene in Bugonia where she actually shaved her head on camera.
She later told Vogue it felt refreshing. “No better feeling in the world. The first shower when you’ve shaved your head? Oh my God, it’s amazing.” At the Venice event, she added that the style is simple. “So much easier than any hairstyle.”
Bugonia stars Jesse Plemons, Alicia Silverstone, Aidan Delbis, Stavros Halkias and more. The movie will first open in select theaters on October 24 before releasing everywhere on October 31.
