[Teaser] Shawn Levy’s ‘Star Wars: Starfighter’ Debuts First Look with Big-Name Cast

Lucasfilm has revealed the first look and full cast for the upcoming Star Wars movie Starfighter, directed by Shawn Levy.

The new image shows Ryan Gosling alongside young actor Flynn Gray on what looks like a landspeeder, a nod to the classic vehicles from the original 1977 film, Star Wars: A New Hope.

Reports say Gosling’s character has a big responsibility in the story. “He must protect his young nephew against evil pursuers,” according to sources from the announcement.

Flynn Gray plays the nephew, while Matt Smith of House of the Dragon and Mia Goth are among the villains. Other cast members include Aaron Pierre, Simon Bird, Jamael Westman, Daniel Ings, and Amy Adams. Production has already started in England.

Shawn Levy, who directed Marvel hits like Deadpool and Wolverine, described the project as a standalone adventure. “This is a standalone. It’s not a prequel, not a sequel. It’s a new adventure. It’s set in a period of time that we haven’t seen explored yet,” Levy said.

The script was written by Jonathan Tropper, known for The Adam Project.

The story takes place five years after the events of The Rise of Skywalker. Levy said he’s excited to be part of the Star Wars universe. “I feel a profound sense of excitement and honor as we begin production on Star Wars: Starfighter,” he said.

“From the day Kathy Kennedy called me up, inviting me to develop an original adventure in this incredible Star Wars galaxy, this experience has been a dream come true, creatively and personally.”

The film is produced by Levy and Kathleen Kennedy, with executive producers including Ryan Gosling, Dan Levine, Mary McLaglen, and Josh McLaglen. Starfighter is set for a theatrical release on May 28, 2027, following The Mandalorian and Grogu, which comes out in May 2026.

Starfighter looks like it could bring a fresh story to the Star Wars universe while introducing exciting new characters and a star-studded cast.
