Back to the Future Returns to the Big Screen for Its 40th Anniversary
Forty years after it first hit theaters, Back to the Future is still as popular as ever. Between theme park attractions, a stage musical, and even a real-life missing-guitar mystery, fans continue to celebrate the classic time-travel film.
Now, starting October 31, audiences can see Robert Zemeckis’ movie on the big screen again. This time, the re-release will be shown in premium formats, including Dolby Cinema, 4DX, D-Box, and IMAX.
Universal Pictures called this a special moment in a press release, saying, “This marks the first time Back to the Future will be presented on the world’s largest screens, offering fans the opportunity to experience the film’s scope and spectacle in the most immersive formats yet.”
To mark the occasion, the studio released a 40th anniversary trailer giving fans a first glimpse of the celebration.

The limited theatrical run starts October 31, and tickets are already available for local theaters. IMAX screenings are also planned, with details available on Universal’s website.

In addition to the theater re-release, Universal Pictures Home Entertainment is rolling out special 40th anniversary editions starting October 14, ahead of October 21, known to fans as Back to the Future Day, a nod to the date from Back to the Future Part II.
The centerpiece is the Back to the Future Trilogy 40th Anniversary Limited Edition Gift Set. According to Universal, the $150 set includes all three films in 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray, and digital formats, plus a collectible Flux Capacitor SteelBook, an exclusive Gibson Mini Guitar replica, an OUTATIME metal license plate, a Back to the Future: A Visual History booklet, and other replica items from the studio archives.

For those who want something smaller, individual Steelbooks for each film are also available. Fans can also buy the full trilogy in 4K Ultra HD, Blu-ray, and digital formats. All of these anniversary releases are available for pre-order now.
With this theatrical re-release and the collector editions, Back to the Future fans have plenty of ways to celebrate the movie’s 40-year legacy this fall.
