MCU Star to Take on Iconic Tony Montana Role in New ‘Scarface’ Remake
A new version of the iconic crime film Scarface is in the works, and Marvel actor Danny Ramirez has been tapped to take on the legendary role of Tony Montana, originally made famous by Al Pacino.
The 1983 Brian De Palma film, which was itself a remake of a 1932 movie based on the 1930 novel, follows a Cuban immigrant rising through the Miami drug trade while struggling with addiction. Over time, the film has become a classic in the crime genre despite receiving mixed reviews upon its release.
In a recent interview with Deadline, Danny Ramirez and producer Tom Culliver discussed their plans for a fresh, modern take on Scarface through their production company, Pinstripes. Ramirez, who is known for playing Joaquin Torres in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, will star as Montana.
The pair emphasized that their adaptation would not simply replicate past versions.
Culliver said, “One of the larger pieces of IP that we’re adapting at the minute is Scarface. Obviously, Danny will play Scarface. We want to modernize it, adapting the original novel. We’re independently developing it; we have some development financing in place. Obviously, there’s the Pacino legacy from the ’80s and then the original 1932 movie, but I think it’s ripe for modernizing, and to have someone like Danny in the lead is really exciting.”
Ramirez added, “[We’ll be] developing our own IP, but also then going out and finding partners that have interesting IP that want to partner with us as creatives. But there’s also some that we’re just, with our little bit of funds, developing ourselves.”
The team also promised that the new Scarface would feature updates to make it relevant for today’s audience. Ramirez said, “Scarface, to us, is the one that it’s been a dream role to play, but also to develop it in a way that I understand it. I think in 2025, it’s more relevant now than ever. So that’s where we’re excited to take this on.”
Culliver emphasized their creative approach, saying, “We’re not going to engage on something if we don’t have a totally unique, fresh way into it. You don’t want to do stuff where you’re just remaking stuff for remakes’ sake. We have something to say with the material. You’ve got to have a new story to tell within it.”
Scarface has a long history of attempted remakes. Since 2011, several directors and writers, including David Yates, Antoine Fuqua, Luca Guadagnino, and the Coen brothers, have been attached at various points.
Earlier scripts aimed to set the story in modern-day Los Angeles and follow a Mexican immigrant’s rise in the criminal underworld. The project has seen multiple changes in directors and casting over the years, with different scripts being rewritten and reworked.
The latest version seeks to honor the legacy of the original while introducing a fresh perspective for a contemporary audience. Ramirez’s casting as Tony Montana signals a bold new chapter for the story, aiming to capture the spirit of the classic while giving it a modern edge.
In my opinion, this new take on Scarface has potential if it respects the core story but updates it for today’s world. Casting Ramirez could bring a fresh energy to the character. What do you think about a modern Scarface with an MCU actor in the lead? Share your thoughts in the comments.
