Frankie Muniz Teases Shocking Surprises in ‘Malcolm in the Middle’ Sequel
Frankie Muniz is back as Malcolm, and he says fans are going to see some surprises when the family sitcom returns.
During an interview on the “Lightweights” podcast, the actor shared how excited he is about the upcoming revival and what people can expect when the Wilkerson family reunites after two decades.
The revival has been talked about for years. Back in 2016, Bryan Cranston said he would love to do a reunion. A few years later, Muniz revealed on Steve-O’s podcast that Cranston was even working on a script for a movie.
At that time, the whole cast was ready to return, except for one person. Muniz didn’t say who it was, but later in 2023, he mentioned on Mayim Bialik’s podcast that it was actually the show’s creator, Linwood Boomer. He explained that Boomer wanted two specific writers to be part of the project before giving his approval.
In December 2024, Disney+ officially announced that a four-episode revival was moving forward. Cranston, Muniz, and Jane Kaczmarek were all confirmed to return.
The story will follow Malcolm and his daughter as Hal and Lois gather the family for their 40th wedding anniversary. The project was first pitched as a two-hour movie but was later split into four half-hour episodes.
Filming began in April 2025 and wrapped the following May. The production was scheduled around Muniz’s busy NASCAR racing calendar. Justin Berfield and Christopher Masterson also came back, but Erik Per Sullivan, who played Dewey, was replaced by Caleb Ellsworth-Clark.
New faces were added too, including Vaughan Murrae as Malcolm’s younger sibling Kelly, Kiana Madeira as Malcolm’s girlfriend Tristan, and Keeley Karsten as his daughter Leah.
Muniz said fans should be ready for a few surprises. “I think people will be surprised, in a sense, where everybody is and the story,” he told “Lightweights.” “It’s hard to fit in 20 years of stuff into four 30-minute episodes, right? But I think people are going to be very happy with what they came up with.”
He also spoke about how much he loved being back on set. “I’m not exaggerating when I say filming this reboot, like I loved it so much, way more than I ever thought I could have,” he said. Muniz even called it “the best time of my entire life.”
Malcolm in the Middle: Life’s Still Unfair does not yet have a release date, but with filming finished, fans won’t have to wait too long to see what the Wilkersons have been up to.
