James Gunn’s ‘Superman’ Sequel Locks Release Date and First Cast Members
Superman will return to the big screen in a new sequel directed by James Gunn. Warner Bros. has confirmed that the film will be titled “Superman: Man of Tomorrow” and is set to open in theaters on July 9, 2027.

The announcement came directly from Gunn, who shared the news on social media. Along with the title and release date, he posted a comic image showing Superman standing next to Lex Luthor in his armored Warsuit.
The visual points to Luthor taking on a central role in the story, and comic readers will recognize the suit as one of Luthor’s most powerful weapons. In the comics, the Warsuit was designed to give him strength on par with Superman.
This development suggests the rivalry between Superman and Luthor will continue in the sequel. Gunn’s first Superman film ended with Luthor failing to defeat the hero using a clone, and it looks like the villain is preparing for a more direct confrontation.
Warner Bros. Discovery is building on the strong box office success of the first movie. Released this past summer, Superman earned more than $611 million worldwide, making it the year’s top superhero release.
Because of that performance, CEO David Zaslav personally confirmed in August that Gunn would return to both write and direct the follow-up.
“Man of Tomorrow” won’t arrive until 2027, but it will not be the only DC project on the calendar. The studio has two other films coming in 2026.
One is Supergirl, a space adventure directed by Craig Gillespie and starring Milly Alcock. The other is Clayface, a darker entry described as a body horror film, directed by James Watkins and starring Tom Rhys Harries and Naomi Ackie.

Gunn shared a few weeks ago that the script for the new Superman film is already in progress. Speaking on Threads, he said he was deep into writing and hinted that the sequel will feel more like a team up story than a simple continuation.
Zaslav also described Superman and the upcoming titles as part of a larger “Super-Family,” which points to DC’s plan to build a connected universe around these characters.
