Creative Arts Emmys Night 1: ‘The Studio,’ ‘The Penguin’ & ‘Severance’ Lead Winners List
The first night of the Creative Arts Emmy Awards lit up the Peacock Theater in downtown Los Angeles with plenty of surprises, laughter, and big wins across TV’s most popular shows. According to the Television Academy, Apple TV+’s The Studio walked away as the night’s biggest winner, collecting nine trophies. HBO Max’s The Penguin followed close behind with eight, while Apple’s Severance picked up six.
Julianne Nicholson scored for Hacks, Bryan Cranston grabbed a win for The Studio, Merritt Wever picked up an Emmy for Severance, and Shawn Hatosy was honored for The Pitt. These were some of the standout acting moments that gave the night its buzz.
The Penguin swept through the technical side, winning for hairstyling, costumes, prosthetic makeup, sound work, and visual effects.
Andor proved just as strong in the creative categories, racking up awards for costumes, production design, picture editing and visual effects. Rebel Ridge was named best TV movie, while Arcane took home Outstanding Animation. Netflix’s Love, Death + Robots also made noise with four wins in juried categories for animation design and style.
Maya Rudolph kicked things off with some playful energy, telling the crowd, “This is the real Emmys. This is the Emmys for the people who make all the magic happen … this is a room full of talented baddies.”
Not everything went smoothly on stage. One of the funniest moments came when Bridgerton won for Outstanding Costumes, and designer John Walter Glaser had trouble keeping his pants up while accepting the award. Over in the comedy section, Desi Lydic from The Daily Show admitted during her speech that she had to watch “too much Fox News” for her role and then thanked “the Deep State” for her Emmy win. Meanwhile, Hacks writer Robby Hoffman sparked chatter by vaping right before presenting the cinematography award.
The Studio showed its strength across many categories, taking home prizes for casting, production design, editing, sound work, and even music supervision. The Penguin’s success stretched from technical craft to original music, while Severance stood tall with wins in sound mixing, title design, cinematography, and music composition.
The Creative Arts Emmys are set to continue with another 49 awards being handed out on Sunday. While the ceremony isn’t airing live, fans will be able to catch the event on FXX on Saturday, September 13 at 8 p.m. ET and PT, just one night before the Primetime Emmys. For those who prefer streaming, Hulu will have it available until October 7.
In short, The Studio led the night with nine wins, followed by The Penguin with eight and Severance with six. Andor, Arcane, and Love, Death + Robots all picked up four awards, while The Boys and Bridgerton earned three each. The Pitt and Adolescence grabbed two apiece, and Rebel Ridge walked away with the honor of best TV movie.
