Channing Tatum Admits What the “Biggest Mistake” of His Career Is
Channing Tatum is opening up about a role he regrets turning down. In a recent interview with Vanity Fair, the actor revealed that director Guillermo del Toro once wanted him to play the Beast in his version of Beauty and the Beast.
Tatum said the timing wasn’t right. He had just welcomed a baby, was already working on a tough film, and didn’t feel the script was ready. Looking back, he called it “one of the biggest mistakes of my career.”
He explained, “Guillermo del Toro wanted to do ‘Beauty and the Beast,’ his version of the Beast. And I’d just had a baby, I was on a movie that was absolutely killing me, and the script wasn’t totally there yet. I was just in a place in my head that I was like, ‘I don’t think I can do this right now.’”
“It was the biggest mistake, because I’m the biggest Guillermo fan ever. And I think Guillermo doing ‘Beauty and the Beast’ would’ve been the sickest movie ever.”
The film was never actually made, but Tatum still wishes he had taken the chance. “He’s got a billion other things that he wants to do. He’s such a creator. I’ll probably never forgive myself on that one, but I hope we get to work together one day,” he said.
While Tatum reflects on what might have been, del Toro is busy with his latest project, Frankenstein. The film recently premiered at the Venice Film Festival and received a 13-minute standing ovation. It stars Oscar Isaac as Frankenstein and Jacob Elordi as his creation. Critics have been mixed, with some praising del Toro’s vision and others feeling the story wasn’t as fresh as expected.
In my opinion, it’s refreshing to see a major actor like Tatum admit to regrets so openly. Everyone makes tough choices in life and work, and sometimes timing gets in the way of opportunity. The good news is, both Tatum and del Toro continue to thrive in their careers, and there’s always a chance they could collaborate in the future.
