Amazon Prime’s Hit Comedy-Drama Scores Season 2 After 93% Rotten Tomatoes Score
Amazon Prime Video has renewed its comedy-drama series Overcompensating for a second season following its successful debut in May 2025.
The show, created by and starring Benito Skinner, follows Benny, a former high-school jock and closeted college student navigating his freshman year. Skinner has said the series is loosely based on his own college experiences.
Overcompensating premiered on May 15, 2025, to mostly positive reviews and quickly became a critical favorite. On Rotten Tomatoes, the show holds a 93% approval rating based on 45 reviews, with the site noting, “As ribald as any self-respecting campus comedy but with a disarmingly sweet core, Overcompensating has nothing to make up for as it proves creator-star Benito Skinner to be the real deal.”
Metacritic assigned it a score of 72 out of 100, indicating generally favorable reviews.
Critics praised the series for its humor and heart. Daniel Fienberg of The Hollywood Reporter called it “a confident and generally funny series-creating debut for well-regarded content creator Skinner, and the cast is packed with breakout performances from lesser-known co-stars, amusing turns from more familiar stars and cameos aplenty.”
Emma Kiely of Collider added, “A hilarious, warm, and honest show from one of comedy’s most exciting voices.”
The show is produced by A24, Amazon MGM Studios, and Jonah Hill’s Strong Baby banner. Skinner expressed his excitement about returning for season two, saying, “I have been so overwhelmed by the insane response to the show, and feel so damn lucky to go back to Yates University with Amazon MGM Studios, A24, Strong Baby, and this legendary cast for season two.”
Vernon Sanders, global head of television at Prime Video and Amazon MGM Studios, also praised the team, stating, “We look forward to our global Prime Video customers enjoying more of Benito’s captivating and bold storytelling in the second season of Overcompensating. Working alongside the talented teams from A24 and Strong Baby has been a joy for everyone involved, and we are excited to see what hilarious moments Benito has planned for season two.”
Overcompensating’s early success makes it one of Amazon Prime’s most promising new series. Its mix of humor, heart, and relatable college experiences has struck a chord with viewers and critics alike.
