Directed by David Michôd, who co-wrote the script with Mirrah Foulkes, the movie follows Martin’s rise in the male-dominated world of boxing.
It also focuses on her troubled marriage to James V. Martin, her trainer who later became abusive and tried to kill her in 2010.
The film first premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 5 in the Special Presentations section. Black Bear Pictures will release it in U.S. theaters on November 7.
Alongside Sydney Sweeney, the cast includes Ben Foster as James V. Martin, Merritt Wever as Martin’s mother, Katy O’Brian as rival boxer Lisa Holewyne, Ethan Embry as her father, and Jess Gabor as Rosie, a character based on Martin’s first girlfriend. Chad L. Coleman also appears as boxing promoter Don King.
Production on Christy began in North Carolina in late September 2024 and wrapped by mid-November of the same year. The film is produced by Anonymous Content, Black Bear Pictures, and several other companies, with Christy Martin herself involved in its development.
Early reviews have been mixed. According to Rotten Tomatoes, 61% of critics have given the movie a positive rating. On Metacritic, the film has a score of 57 out of 100, which signals “average” reactions from reviewers.
With the trailer now out, viewers can see Sweeney step into the ring in what could be one of her most intense performances yet. The movie highlights both Martin’s success as a trailblazer in women’s boxing and the personal struggles that shaped her life outside the ring.
