Nintendo has revealed the title and release date for the sequel to last year’s hit Super Mario Bros. Movie. The new film will be called The Super Mario Galaxy Movie and is set to arrive in theaters on April 3, 2026.

The announcement was made during Friday’s Nintendo Direct, just days before the 40th anniversary of the original Super Mario Bros. game, which launched in September 1985.

The sequel takes inspiration from Super Mario Galaxy, the popular 2007 Wii game. A short teaser was shown during the Nintendo Direct.

It opened with Mario asleep under a tree as Princess Peach’s castle stood in the distance. The camera then panned upward to space, with quick shots of Monty Mole tunneling underground, Cheep Cheeps swimming, and Toads moving around the castle grounds.

All of the voice actors from the first movie will return for the sequel. That includes Chris Pratt as Mario, Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach, Charlie Day as Luigi, Jack Black as Bowser, Keegan-Michael Key as Toad, and Kevin Michael Richardson as Kamek.

The original Super Mario Bros. Movie was released in April 2023 and became a box office phenomenon. It earned $1.36 billion worldwide, making it the highest-grossing video game adaptation ever. It also climbed to number five on the list of the most successful animated films of all time, behind Ne Zha 2, Inside Out 2, The Lion King, and Frozen 2.

That film told the story of Mario and Luigi, two brothers from Brooklyn who find themselves in the Mushroom Kingdom. With the help of Princess Peach, Toad, and Donkey Kong, Mario fought to save Luigi from the villainous Bowser.

Nintendo is expanding its film projects beyond Mario as well. The company is working with Sony Pictures on a Legend of Zelda movie, set for release on March 26, 2027. Directed by Wes Ball, it will star Bo Bragason as Zelda and Benjamin Evan Ainsworth as Link.

With The Super Mario Galaxy Movie on the way, Nintendo and Illumination are hoping to keep the momentum going after the record-breaking success of the first film.
