Marvel Drops First Synopsis for ‘Avengers: Doomsday’
Marvel has revealed the first official synopsis for Avengers: Doomsday, giving fans a glimpse of what’s coming in the next major MCU event.
The film, which will hit theaters on December 18, 2026, will bring together heroes from across the Marvel universe to face a new threat. Disney shared the synopsis at the Disney Expo in China:
“Doctor Doom has officially arrived in the MCU. This villain, a master of cutting-edge science and powerful magic, will unleash a cascading crisis across the entire multiverse.”

Avengers: Doomsday is the fifth Avengers movie, following Avengers: Endgame (2019), and is part of Phase Six of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It is being directed by Anthony and Joe Russo, with Michael Waldron and Stephen McFeely writing the screenplay. Marvel Studios and AGBO are producing the film, while Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures will distribute it.
The movie features a massive ensemble cast, including Chris Hemsworth, Vanessa Kirby, Anthony Mackie, Sebastian Stan, Letitia Wright, Paul Rudd, Wyatt Russell, Tenoch Huerta Mejía, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, Simu Liu, Florence Pugh, Kelsey Grammer, Lewis Pullman, Danny Ramirez, Joseph Quinn, David Harbour, Winston Duke, Hannah John-Kamen, Tom Hiddleston, Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen, Alan Cumming, Rebecca Romijn, James Marsden, Channing Tatum, Pedro Pascal, and Robert Downey Jr., who will play the new villain, Doctor Doom.
The story will see the Avengers joining forces with the Wakandans, the Fantastic Four, the New Avengers, and the X-Men to take on Doom’s multiverse-spanning threat. This large-scale crossover is expected to connect characters and storylines from previous MCU films and 20th Century Fox’s Marvel movies.
The film went through several changes before arriving at this point. Originally, two new Avengers films—The Kang Dynasty and Secret Wars—were planned to conclude Phase Six. Jonathan Majors was set to reprise his role as Kang the Conqueror, but legal issues led to his removal from the project.
Following this, Marvel brought back the Russo brothers and added Downey as Doctor Doom, giving the film its new subtitle, Doomsday. Filming began in April at Pinewood Studios in England, with additional shooting in England and Bahrain.
The sequel, Secret Wars, is set for release on December 17, 2027, continuing the story of the multiverse.
