‘The Penguin’ Star Won’t Return for ‘The Batman 2,’ Matt Reeves Confirms
Fans of the DC Universe have been buzzing about the next chapter in the Batman saga, but director Matt Reeves has confirmed that Sofia Falcone, played by Cristin Milioti in the hit spinoff series ‘The Penguin,’ will not appear in The Batman: Part II.
The news comes as the sequel, starring Robert Pattinson as Batman, Jeffrey Wright as Jim Gordon, Andy Serkis as Alfred Pennyworth, and Colin Farrell reprising his role as the Penguin, gears up for production.
“Cristin’s not in this one, but that’s because we were so deep into the script by the time we were in the show, so… but we’ll see. I mean, I think she’s incredible.”
“What she did in the show is just astonishing. And what Lauren did in creating that character…I mean creating this version of the character is so special so it would be really exciting to do something with her. But she is not in this one in full disclosure, just because we were so far along in the story. It might upset the applecart, let’s say, given where the story goes, and that we were exploring,” Reeves told MTV.
He added, “There are some things where it’s like, oh we’d love to do this but actually that doesn’t fit within where the story goes.”
The Batman: Part II is scheduled to hit theaters on October 1, 2027, with Reeves returning as director and co-writer alongside Mattson Tomlin.
The film will continue exploring the corruption and division in Gotham City following the events of The Batman and the aftermath of The Penguin. Production had been delayed by the 2023 Hollywood labor disputes and Reeves’s efforts to perfect the script, which was completed in June. Filming is set to begin in January 2026 at Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden in England.
Reeves also shared thoughts about the future of the Batman Crime Saga and the possibility of a second season of The Penguin. “Obviously the priority has been getting the movie into prep. We are now in prep. So that’s really what the priority’s been. But there have, from the beginning, I said that there were certain characters and certain things I wanted to do and so I’m hoping now that these conversations will begin again in earnest.”
“If we can find something that we think is truly a story that’s better than the first and we’re telling then we know that Collin would be up for [season 2], but short of that, he’s not going to be up for it, none of us are going to be up for it. Lauren won’t be up for it. So the answer is we’d love to do more things, but they have to be the things that first of all fit within whatever,” he explained.

“Obviously I’m not in control of all the business part of the DC but I have things that I would love to do,” Reeves added.
At the end of the first season of The Penguin, Ozz Cobb rises to the top of Gotham’s crime world, while Sofia Falcone ends up back in Arkham Asylum, contracted by Catwoman.
While fans had hoped she would play a major role in The Batman sequel, Reeves clarified that her story will not continue in Part II, leaving the door open for future spin-offs or new storylines within the Gotham universe.
