Margot Robbie Speaks Out to ‘Babylon’ Fans With Heartfelt Message
Margot Robbie has spoken directly to fans of Babylon, the 2022 film that struggled at the box office but has since found new appreciation.
The movie, directed by Damien Chazelle, told the story of Hollywood’s transition from silent films to sound in the late 1920s.
It featured an ensemble cast including Brad Pitt, Diego Calva, Jean Smart, Jovan Adepo, Li Jun Li, and Robbie herself. Despite the talent behind it, Babylon was a financial disappointment, earning about $63 million against a budget close to $80 million. At the time, critics were split as well, though the film did go on to pick up Golden Globe, BAFTA, and Oscar nominations, winning awards for its score and production design.
In a new video for Letterboxd, Robbie appeared alongside Colin Farrell in a game where actors had to identify their films based on user reviews. One review described Babylon as “Excess and chaos for the ones who dream. Hell yes!” Robbie instantly recognized the film and was then asked if she had a message for its fans.
“I always wondered if you people were out there, because when it got slammed at the time, both critically and at the box office, I was confused because I think it’s an amazing movie, and one I’m very, very proud of being in,” Robbie said.
She added, “I always thought maybe this will be like one of those movies that 20 years later, everyone’s like, ‘Oh my god, Babylon didn’t do well at the time? That’s crazy!’ I didn’t even have to wait that long! So if you love Babylon, I love you. And we think alike when it comes to movies because it’s a great film.”

This isn’t the first time Robbie has shared her feelings about how the film was received. In an earlier interview with podcast host Ben Mankiewicz, she admitted she still doesn’t understand why audiences dismissed it.
“I love it. I don’t get it either,” she said. “I know I am biased because I am very close to the project and I obviously believe in it, but I still can’t figure out why people hated it. I wonder if in 20 years people are going to be like, ‘Wait, Babylon didn’t do well at the time?’”
For Robbie, Babylon remains one of her most cherished projects, and she’s glad that more people are starting to see it in the same way.
