A new live-action movie based on The Sims is officially in the works, with producers promising a fun and unique take on the popular video game.

The project is being developed by LuckyChap Entertainment and Vertigo Entertainment, with Kate Herron directing and co-writing alongside Briony Redman. EA confirmed in September 2024 that the film will be produced in partnership with Amazon MGM Studios.

The road to this movie has been long. Back in 2007, 20th Century Fox bought the rights to The Sims and planned a film written by Brian Lynch and produced by John Davis. However, the project got stuck in development for years, and when Disney acquired 21st Century Fox in 2019, the original plans were canceled.

Producer Roy Lee spoke to The Direct while promoting his new movie The Long Walk. When asked what audiences could expect from The Sims, Lee compared the project to other IP-driven hits: “It’s one of these things where I can’t talk about it much, because it’s going to be unique. And it’s a sort of like, people were wondering, ‘What could a ‘LEGO Movie’ be?’ until you saw it.”

Lee also highlighted Margot Robbie’s involvement as a producer through LuckyChap Entertainment, using her hit film Barbie as another point of comparison. “Somewhere in between both ‘The Lego Movie’ and ‘Barbie’ is where ‘The Sims’ movie will be,” he said. “And I’m producing with Margot Robbie. And [audiences] were probably wondering, ‘What could a ‘Barbie’ movie be?’”

Kate Gorman, EA’s vice president and general manager of The Sims, added that the team hopes to make a big impact with the movie. She cited Barbie (2023) as inspiration, saying they want to “make an impact the size of something like a Barbie movie.”

The Sims film arrives at a time when video game adaptations are gaining traction in theaters. Minecraft has already become one of the biggest films of 2025, bringing back key characters from the game. While Barbie and The Lego Movie might be bigger names in the IP world, producers are confident that The Sims can carve out its own success with a mix of humor, creativity, and fan service.

This movie has the potential to surprise audiences with its playful and unpredictable style. With a strong team behind it and Margot Robbie involved, it could become a fun hit. What do you think? Are you excited to see The Sims come to life on the big screen? Share your thoughts in the comments.
