Universal Pictures has officially announced that the new “Miami Vice” movie will hit theaters on August 6, 2027. Casting is underway, and filming is set to start sometime next year.

The film will be directed by Joseph Kosinski, who recently helmed the hits F1: The Movie and Top Gun: Maverick. Kosinski’s take on Miami Vice will dive into the flashy yet dangerous world of 1980s Miami.

The story is inspired by the original pilot and first season of the classic TV series that became a cultural touchstone, influencing everything from fashion to filmmaking. The movie will also be shot for IMAX.

Dylan Clark, known for producing The Batman, is producing the movie alongside Kosinski. The screenplay is written by Dan Gilroy and Eric Singer, and it’s based on characters created by Anthony Yerkovich. The series was executive produced by Yerkovich and Michael Mann.

The original Miami Vice TV show aired from 1984 to 1990 on NBC, starring Don Johnson and Philip Michael Thomas as two undercover Miami cops famous for their pastel suits. Michael Mann previously described the series’ goal as trying to “break the form of everything that had come before.”

This isn’t the first Miami Vice movie; in 2006, Michael Mann directed a feature starring Jamie Foxx and Colin Farrell, which earned $163.7 million worldwide.

The new film promises to capture the style and intensity of the original series while bringing a modern cinematic touch with Kosinski at the helm.

This reboot has the potential to blend classic 80s style with today’s high-octane filmmaking. Fans of the original show and new viewers alike could find something exciting here. What do you think about revisiting Miami Vice in theaters? Share your thoughts in the comments.
