Several Irish and international stars have united in support of Palestine ahead of a major benefit concert at Wembley Stadium in London.

The event, hosted by Together For Palestine, is currently being live-streamed, with performances from Paul Weller, Damon Albarn, King Krule, Bastille, and more, according to the organisers.

Ahead of the concert, a video featuring actors, musicians, and public figures was released to promote the event and speak out against Israel’s actions in Gaza.

Among the participants were Irish actors Cillian Murphy, Chris O’Dowd, Sharon Horgan, Caitriona Balfe, and Laura Whitmore. International figures such as Brian Cox, Malala Yousafzai, Billie Eilish and her brother Finneas, and Joaquin Phoenix also contributed. The source of this information is Together For Palestine and The Guardian, which published an opinion piece by Brian Eno, one of the concert organisers.

In the video, celebrities directly addressed the ongoing violence and urged viewers to act. Actor Steve Coogan said, “It’s important to speak out now, not when this is over. Right now, while it’s happening. For Palestine.” Michael Wayne Rosen added, “Together, we know that the leaders of this country are complicit in the mass murder of civilians in Gaza and the West Bank.”

The message called on people to pressure governments, demand an immediate ceasefire, and support peaceful campaigns for justice. The group declared, “We have to tell the truth on behalf of the people of Palestine. It’s always been the artist’s role in society to speak out, to risk speaking truth to power.”

Cillian Murphy’s participation is notable, as the actor has previously remained cautious about commenting publicly on the Gaza crisis. His involvement, along with statements from other artists, has been seen as a significant moment of celebrity activism.

At the European premiere of the film Steve in Cork, writer Max Porter addressed the situation in Gaza, saying, “Almost every single hour of every single day of that entire almost 800 days, a child has been murdered in Palestine.” Murphy’s quiet presence during that event and in the video has drawn attention.

The Wembley benefit concert will support humanitarian work in Gaza. Proceeds will go through the Together For Palestine Fund and be distributed via the charity Choose Love to various organizations. Performers include Damon Albarn, Bastille, James Blake, Jamie xx, Sampha, and Palestinian musicians Adnan Joubran, Faraj Suleiman, and Nai Barghouti.

The celebrities ended the video with a clear call for peace: “Together for Palestine. Stop the killing. Ceasefire now.”

This level of international celebrity involvement brings much-needed attention to the crisis in Gaza. Using their platforms, these artists are amplifying voices that are often unheard. I’d love to hear your thought, do you think celebrity activism like this makes a real difference? Share your opinion in the comments.
