Fans of found-footage horror have reason to be excited: the cult classic Grave Encounters is getting a full reboot.

The 2011 Canadian horror film, created by the Vicious Brothers, originally followed a paranormal reality show crew who lock themselves inside a haunted psychiatric hospital. The film became known for its intense scares and viral trailer, which racked up over 30 million views before the movie even premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival.

Despite a small budget of $120,000, the movie earned more than $5 million and quickly gained a loyal following. A sequel followed in 2012.

On September 18, the writers behind both the original Grave Encounters and its sequel announced that a new version of the film is officially in the works, with production set to start next year.

In a joint statement, writers Long and Bosworth praised director Justin Minihan, saying, “Our creative connection with Colin was undeniable on ‘Coyotes’ and we wanted to continue that relationship as quickly as possible. He is a very rare combination of brilliant filmmaker and fun collaborator, and we are thrilled to help him resurrect a new imagining of one of his first horror gems, ‘Grave Encounters.’

‘Grave Encounters’ has such a passionate fan base, and we include ourselves among them. We hope to honor the legacy of the original film, while unleashing something even darker.”

Minihan and co-director Ortiz added, “We made ‘Grave Encounters’ in our 20s on a self-financed shoestring budget, and it scared the hell out of people. Justin has defined genre cinema for over a decade and is the definitive scream king. He’s the perfect choice to reimagine ‘Grave Encounters’ for a new generation.”

The original Grave Encounters is remembered for its mix of supernatural horror and found-footage style, which set it apart from other horror movies at the time. While it received mixed reviews from critics, many praised its ability to deliver genuine scares. The reboot promises to retain that intensity while modernizing the story for today’s audience.

This new project could bring the beloved story to a wider audience and potentially introduce the terrifying hospital to a whole new generation of horror fans.
