Unresolved Videogame Storylines

Some games close the book on their plots while others leave a few pages unturned. Developers set up mysteries that stretch across sequels and new entries, and sometimes those threads never get tied up in a neat bow. Players get a lot of clues and context, but key motivations, identities, or outcomes stay just out of reach.

This list gathers fifteen storylines that still have open questions. Each one includes what the games have already established and exactly what remains unknown, so you can see where the clues point and where the trail goes cold.

Half-Life 2: Episode Two

Half-Life 2: Episode Two
Valve

City 17 falls, the Combine regroup, and Eli Vance dies at the hands of an Advisor after the team learns about the Borealis. The gravity of that ship and its experimental tech is clear from conversations, logs, and the urgent plan to reach it. The episode ends with the mission unresolved and the resistance in shock.

Later events in a prequel show Alyx striking a bargain with the G Man, which changes the moment of Eli’s death and sets a new course. The identity and purpose of the G Man remain undisclosed, the fate of the Borealis is still unknown, and the next target for Gordon Freeman is not specified inside the story.

Shenmue III

Shenmue III
Sony Computer Entertainment

Ryo Hazuki continues his pursuit of Lan Di while the Phoenix Mirror and Dragon Mirror remain central to an old prophecy. The journey brings him to Guilin and Niaowu, where local histories and carved imagery describe a figure who will bring either light or destruction. Shenhua’s connection to the prophecy deepens through dialogue and shared investigations.

Lan Di escapes, the prophecy’s promised outcome does not arrive, and the true function of the mirrors is not demonstrated on screen. The leadership structure of the Chi You Men remains largely hidden, and the broader chapter map that underpins the saga has not reached the confrontation that the clues keep foreshadowing.

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim

Bethesda Softworks

Ruins, automatons, and tonal architecture document the vanished Dwemer across the province. Lexicons, research notes, and the testimony of Yagrum Bagarn point to experiments with Kagrenac’s tools and the Heart of Lorkhan near Red Mountain. Surviving machines still follow ancient routines that hint at a society obsessed with precise control of the material world.

No source inside the games provides a definitive account of what happened in the instant of the disappearance. The series does not show a functioning Dwemer city in the present day, and there is no agreed answer in lore materials about whether the Dwemer transcended, were destroyed, or exist in another state.

Bloodborne

Bloodborne
Sony Computer Entertainment

Yharnam’s healing blood and the investigations of Byrgenwerth and the School of Mensis lead to contact with Great Ones. Item descriptions and boss arenas show that the Great Ones lose children and seek surrogates, and that the nightmare is linked to these rituals. The endings present different outcomes that place the Hunter in conflicting roles.

The true origin of the nightmare and the complete nature of the Great Ones are not explained by any single authority in the game. The relationship between the Moon Presence, the Hunter’s Dream, and the waking city remains unclear, and the long term results of each ending are not established by later scenes.

Mass Effect 3

Mass Effect 3
Electronic Arts

The Crucible fires through the Citadel and changes the status of the Reapers, synthetic life, and the mass relay network. War assets, codex entries, and final cutscenes show survival across species and scattered beginnings of repair. The Normandy’s landing and the memorial wall ground the consequences in the lives of the crew.

The political order among surviving factions is not defined in a unified postwar account. The status of relays, the future of synthetic intelligences, and the broader implications of the Crucible’s design remain conditional on choices that later mainline entries have not resolved on screen.

Assassin’s Creed Valhalla

Isu vaults, hidden temples, and First Civilization devices drive discoveries in England and beyond. Eivor’s visions and the Animus readings connect present day researchers to the ancient precursors who used artifacts that shape minds and fate. Postgame arcs bring modern characters into contact with places outside normal time.

The franchise does not provide a final ledger of the Isu endgame or a clear statement of the goals held by entities that guide or mislead humanity. The current plans of modern day actors who control Pieces of Eden remain incomplete, and the consequences of using devices that bend perception are not fully recorded.

The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom

The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom

Ancient tablets, murals, and relics tie Hyrule’s present to a long history that includes catastrophes and royal lineages. The world contains names and structures that point to multiple earlier eras and figures, and characters speak about legends rather than fixed dates. Both recent entries reference a deep past that shaped the surface and skies.

No in game record places the new era on one branch of the official split timeline with firm evidence acknowledged by inhabitants. The exact sequence of ancient conflicts, the placement of recent events within that split, and the lineage of key relics remain open inside the fiction.

Kingdom Hearts III

Kingdom Hearts III
Square Enix

The Master of Masters delivers prophecies, disappears, and leaves a black box whose contents remain hidden. Later battles end one chapter, and the setting shifts toward a city that acts as a plane of reality apart from the original worlds. Characters tied to early unions reappear with unclear objectives.

The identity, motives, and endgame of the Master of Masters are still not revealed by any scene in the main story. The rules that govern the new city and its connection to the rest of the worlds are incomplete, and the reunion of earlier leaders lacks a definitive purpose in the current era.

Halo Infinite

Halo Infinite
Microsoft Studios

Records on Zeta Halo describe the Endless as a species that survived what destroyed other life. The campaign shows human forces fighting the Banished while a new AI attempts to repair damage left by a previous rogue copy. A hidden scene depicts a leader engaging with an entity that aligns with the imprisoned group.

The series has not detailed what the Endless want, how they survived the ancient weapon, or what their release would mean for the balance between human factions and Forerunner systems. The timeline for their emergence and their abilities compared to other threats remain unanswered within the narrative.

Dragon Age: Inquisition

Dragon Age: Inquisition
Electronic Arts

An elven companion reveals in the Trespasser epilogue that he is Solas, the Dread Wolf who created the Veil. He explains that the Veil harmed his people and vows to remove it, which would reshape reality across Thedas. Codices and dialogue describe a conflict among elven gods that preceded the barrier.

The plan to unmake the Veil has not been carried out or stopped on screen, so the resulting state of nations that depend on current rules is unknown. The historical truth of the elven pantheon and the cost of restoring the old world remain unverified by events inside the games.

Final Fantasy VII Remake

Final Fantasy VII Remake
Square Enix

The retelling introduces beings that enforce the original course of events and then shows that force being overcome. Key scenes diverge from the first version, and a character once presumed dead appears in a separate thread. Dialogue signals that later chapters will not follow the same path.

The project has not resolved how the separate threads relate or whether they belong to one reality or several. The long term status of characters whose fates changed and the final objective of the antagonist within this altered context remain open questions inside the story.

Cyberpunk 2077

Cyberpunk 2077
CD PROJEKT RED

A mayoral couple reports surveillance and memory changes that do not trace to a single known corporation. The investigation points to contractors and signal tampering that reaches into private spaces, and evidence suggests a network operating beyond city oversight. A figure with high level access later proposes a heist that targets an orbital facility.

The connection between this figure, the brainwashing of local officials, and the governance of Night City is not proven in game. His employer, his methods, and his objectives remain unclear, and the quest line ends without exposing the full structure behind the interference.

Elden Ring

Elden Ring
Bandai Namco Entertainment

Clues across the Lands Between show that Miquella sought a cure for his sister and designed a new order apart from the Golden one. His cocoon draws followers and enemies, and his influence alters places far from Leyndell. A journey to a separate land reveals more of his plan and ends with a battle that changes his immediate circumstances.

The story stops short of showing Miquella’s final form or the complete world he intended to build. The nature of his charm, the fate of those bound to him, and the ultimate outcome of his design remain unresolved in dialogue and item descriptions.

Control

Control
505 Games

The Federal Bureau of Control catalogs Objects of Power and Altered World Events while the Board communicates through the Hotline on the Astral Plane. Another entity named the Former appears in the same space and speaks with different phrasing that implies a schism. The Oldest House shifts its layout and hosts thresholds to other realities that connect to events beyond everyday physics.

The game does not define what the Board and the Former are or how they relate to each other. The reason the Oldest House exists where it does remains unknown, and the long term impact of the Director’s bond with Polaris is not detailed in Bureau files.

Gears 5

Gears 5
Microsoft Studios

Late in the campaign the player chooses which squadmate survives a confrontation with the Swarm Queen. The immediate aftermath reflects the choice, and the Coalition of Ordered Governments continues its fight with strained resources and divided leadership. The Queen’s survival and new form escalate the threat beyond the Locust origins.

A canonical path for that choice has not been established on screen, which keeps the status of key characters in flux. The next major operation against the Swarm, the fate of captured cities, and the final strategy to end the cycle remain unknown inside the current storyline.

The Wolf Among Us

The Wolf Among Us
Telltale Games

A case in Fabletown exposes a criminal enterprise and reveals ribbons that control certain characters. The final scene raises doubts about a key witness’s identity and about what she told the sheriff during the investigation. Evidence gathered across the episodes does not confirm a single definitive reading of that moment.

The truth behind the witness’s last words and whether she appeared in earlier scenes under another guise are not settled. The network that enabled the ribbon magic is damaged but not fully mapped, and the case file closes with those key details left incomplete.
