More than 10 years ago, Tom Hardy told fans he was signed on for three more Mad Max movies after the release of Fury Road. Around the same time, director George Miller started talking about a follow-up project called Mad Max: The Wasteland.

Miller later explained that he and co-writer Nico Lathouris had already written what was basically a novella about Max’s life before Fury Road.

The story would cover the year leading up to his capture by Immortan Joe’s forces. Miller wanted to turn that novella into a script, describing it as another prequel with plenty of action but also a character-driven story like Furiosa. He also said he was “waiting to see the reception on Furiosa” before taking the next step.

When Furiosa finally came out, Hardy cast doubt on the future of the project. While promoting The Bikeriders, he told an interviewer, “I don’t think it’s happening.” It wasn’t clear if he meant his role in it or the film itself.

Miller kept the door open, though. In February 2025, during an interview with Vulture, he said he was still interested in The Wasteland. But he added, “If for whatever reason the planets align, you can never tell. Too often, you’re lining up to do a movie and then something happens. Some things fall into place and some don’t, so all I can say is we’ll see.”

The problem is that Furiosa didn’t perform well at the box office. According to Deadline, even though the movie got strong reviews, Warner Bros. lost around $120 million on it, making it the studio’s second-biggest money loser of 2024. That made the chances of Miller, now 80 years old, directing The Wasteland look very slim. He even admitted recently that his next movie wouldn’t be a Mad Max project.

But now there’s been a big update. The podcast Mad Max Bible, which has become the go-to source for news on the series, says that Miller’s long-delayed Wasteland is being reworked into a TV show. Screenwriter Shaun Grant, known for Nitram, has reportedly been brought in to write the script.

The idea of The Wasteland has been around for decades. Miller first thought of it in the 1980s as a TV series. When that didn’t happen, it became a video game idea, then a book, then a film script. Now, after all those changes, it looks like the story might return to where it started, as a series for television.
