Brad Winderbaum Says ‘Marvel Zombies’ Was Turned Into a Series to Bring in Fan-Favorite MCU Character
Marvel fans will soon see the animated Marvel Zombies story unfold on Disney+, but the project didn’t start out as a series.
According to Marvel Studios executive Brad Winderbaum, the original plan was to make it into a film. That changed when they realized they wanted to add Spider-Man.
“We have certain rights to the character … That meant that we had to take our big epic story and break it down into 4 chapters,” Winderbaum told fans.
The series will pick up from the popular What If…? episode “What If… Zombies?!” which showed a world where Earth’s heroes were infected by a virus that turned them into zombies.
The new show will follow a group of survivors fighting their way through that dangerous world, facing off against zombie versions of some of Marvel’s most powerful characters.
The voice cast is packed with familiar MCU stars, including Awkwafina, David Harbour, Simu Liu, Elizabeth Olsen, Florence Pugh, Paul Rudd, Wyatt Russell, Hailee Steinfeld, Tessa Thompson, Dominique Thorne, and Iman Vellani. They’ll be reprising their roles alongside other actors in the ensemble.
Directed by Bryan Andrews with Zeb Wells as head writer, Marvel Zombies will also be the first Marvel Studios Animation project rated TV-MA, leaning into darker and more intense themes. The animation is being handled by Stellar Creative Lab, the same team behind What If…?

The show will premiere on Disney+ on September 24, and will include four episodes. It’s officially part of Phase Six of the MCU.
Turning Marvel Zombies into a series instead of a movie feels like the right choice. Breaking the story into four chapters gives them more time to dive into the characters and horror elements. Plus, having Spider-Man included is a big win for fans. What do you think? Do you prefer Marvel Zombies as a series instead of a film? Share your thoughts in the comments.
