The first trailer for Justin Lin’s new movie Last Days has just been released, giving audiences their first look at the story of John Allen Chau.

Chau was a young missionary who traveled to North Sentinel Island, home to the Sentinelese, one of the world’s most isolated tribes. His attempt to share his Christian faith with the tribe ended with his death, a story that quickly gained worldwide attention.

The film is directed by Justin Lin and written by Ben Ripley. It is based on Alex Perry’s 2019 Outside magazine article “The Last Days of John Allen Chau.” Lin also worked as a producer, along with Andrew Schneider, Sal Gatdula, Ellen Goldsmith-Vein, Eric Robinson, and Clayton Townsend. The project was developed by The Gotham Group.

Sky Yang plays John Allen Chau in the film, joined by actors like Radhika Apte, Naveen Andrews, Ken Leung, Toby Wallace, Ciara Bravo, Claire Price, Dieudonné Ngabo, and Marny Kennedy. Filming began in May 2024 in Thailand.

The movie had its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival on January 28. It is set to hit theaters in the United States on October 24.

Early reviews have been mixed. According to Rotten Tomatoes, only 28% of critics gave it a positive score from a total of 18 reviews. Metacritic reported a weighted average score of 40 out of 100 based on 9 reviews, describing the reaction as “mixed or average.”

The trailer hints at a tense and emotional drama that looks at faith, obsession, and isolation. It shows Chau’s determination to reach the Sentinelese, despite the dangers.

The true story behind the movie has been a source of debate since it happened. Many saw Chau as someone driven by faith, while others criticized him for putting himself and the tribe at risk. The film looks set to bring that discussion to the screen.
