Andrew Garfield Talks Live-Action Spider-Man Showdowns: Who Would Come Out on Top?
Andrew Garfield recently opened up about a question Spider-Man fans have been debating for years: if his Spider-Man, Tobey Maguire’s, and Tom Holland’s versions were in a fight, who would win?
Garfield kept it simple and friendly, saying, “We wouldn’t fight… We’re friends.”
Garfield also addressed rumors about returning to the Spider-Man franchise. In a recent GQ interview, a fan asked if he or Maguire would appear in Marvel’s upcoming Avengers: Doomsday. Garfield answered clearly: “No, unequivocally f**** no.”
Garfield first played Peter Parker in 2012’s The Amazing Spider-Man, but the sequel in 2014 did not perform well, ending his initial run abruptly. Last year, he told Esquire that he felt “left dangling” after his role ended. Returning for Spider-Man: No Way Home was a special moment for him, giving fans a chance to see him back as the web-slinger.
Reflecting on the process of No Way Home, Garfield shared that he wasn’t sure Tobey Maguire would join. “I thought Tobey is not going to want to do that. He’ll act every 10 years much to my chagrin, and I’ve shared that to him,” Garfield said.
When I heard that he was kind of leaning in I thought it was either going to be the greatest thing in the world or the worst thing in the world. I am so grateful because it was the most joyful thing ever. All the pressure was on Tom.”
Garfield emphasized that he would be open to reprising Spider-Man again under the right circumstances. “I would 100% come back [as Spider-Man] if it was the right thing, if it’s additive to the culture, if there’s a great concept or something that hasn’t been done before that’s unique and odd and exciting that you can sink your teeth into. I love that character, and it brings joy. If part of what I bring is joy, then I’m joyful in return,” he said.
Currently, Tom Holland is filming Spider-Man: Brand New Day, and rumors have swirled that Garfield might appear. Earlier this year, Garfield addressed the speculation, saying: “I’m gonna disappoint you. Yeah, no. But I know no one’s gonna trust anything I say from now on.”
