It looks like the long-awaited arrival of the X-Men in the Marvel Cinematic Universe finally has a release date.

According to journalist Jeff Sneider, Marvel Studios is planning to release its upcoming X-Men reboot on May 5, 2028.

The date hasn’t been officially confirmed by Disney or Marvel yet, but Sneider revealed the news on his show The Hot Mic, saying the announcement could be made soon.

That release window is significant; it falls exactly 20 years after the debut of Iron Man in May 2008, the movie that launched the MCU.

The timing also makes sense in the larger timeline, as Avengers: Secret Wars is expected to arrive in December 2027, serving as the conclusion of the current Marvel era. The new X-Men film is said to represent a fresh start for the franchise and the universe as a whole.

Director Jake Schreier, known for Thunderbolts*, is attached to lead the project. His appointment reportedly came after strong early reactions to his work on Thunderbolts*, which gave Marvel confidence in his ability to handle another ensemble film.

The script is being written by Michael Lesslie, who officially joined the project in 2025 after entering talks the previous year. Lesslie’s past work includes The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes and Assassin’s Creed.

Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige first teased the idea of mutants joining the MCU back in 2019 at San Diego Comic-Con.

He emphasized that Marvel’s take on the X-Men would differ from 20th Century Fox’s version and would explore the concept of mutants in a new way. Feige has since said that the upcoming reboot will feature an entirely new cast rather than bringing back the previous actors, describing it as a “youth-oriented” film centered around a new generation of heroes.

Fans have already seen glimpses of mutants appearing across the MCU, particularly in recent projects tied to the multiverse storyline. With Secret Wars expected to “reset” the MCU, this new X-Men film will reportedly kick off the next phase of storytelling.

If the reports are accurate, X-Men will land in theaters on May 5, 2028, marking a major milestone for Marvel Studios as it celebrates two decades of cinematic storytelling.
