Nicholas Galitzine and Taylor Zakhar Perez will reprise their roles as Prince Henry and Alex, the British royal and the outgoing son of the U.S. president whose rivalry turns into a secret romance. The first film, based on Casey McQuiston’s bestselling 2019 novel, premiered in August 2023 and captured audiences with its mix of comedy, romance, and heartfelt storytelling.
The sequel will be directed by Jamie Babbit, known for But I’m a Cheerleader and episodes of TV series like Gilmore Girls, Russian Doll, Silicon Valley, and Only Murders in the Building. Babbit said in a statement, “After directing But I’m a Cheerleader in my 20s, I’m thrilled to be back in the queer love universe of Red, White & Royal Wedding. We all need this kind of optimism, fantasy, and gay joy. I’m thrilled to work with this brilliant team.”
The screenplay for the sequel was written by Matthew López, who directed the first film, along with Gemma Burgess and Casey McQuiston. López, who is also producing, shared, “I’m excited we get to continue telling Alex and Henry’s story with Red, White & Royal Wedding. It’s been a blast to dream up the next chapter of their story as a producer and co-writer and I’m delighted to be passing the directing baton to Jamie, whose vision and sense of humor will be a perfect match for our film.”
Julie Rapaport, Head of Film, Production and Development at Amazon MGM Studios, expressed her excitement for the project, saying, “We couldn’t be more excited to continue that journey with Jamie Babbit at the helm — her sharp comedic sensibility and heartfelt storytelling make her the perfect director to build on the magic of the first film, in which Matthew López beautifully brought to life from Casey McQuiston’s beloved book. Together with Jamie, Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter, Matthew, Casey, Jennifer Salke, Gemma Burgess, and of course Nicholas Galitzine and Taylor Zakhar Perez, we can’t wait to bring fans an unforgettable new chapter in their love story.”
While the plot details are still under wraps, the sequel is expected to continue exploring Henry and Alex’s relationship after the first film ended with them embracing their love and celebrating Alex’s mother’s reelection as president. Other cast members, including Clifton Collins Jr., Sarah Shahi, Rachel Hilson, and Uma Thurman, may also return. Thurman confirmed in a July 2025 Letterboxd interview, “When it’s ready, I will do it.”
The film currently does not have a release date, but the first movie is available to stream on Prime Video, giving fans a chance to revisit the story before the sequel arrives.
