As of October 18th, the 2025 sci-fi horror film Companion is available to stream on Prime Video. Written and directed by Drew Hancock in his directorial debut, the movie follows a couple, played by Sophie Thatcher and Jack Quaid, on what is supposed to be a relaxing weekend getaway with friends at a remote cabin.

Things quickly spiral out of control when they discover one of the guests is actually a companion robot, blending suspense, technology, and dark humor.

Produced by the team behind Barbarian, including Roy Lee, Raphael Margules, and J. D. Lifshitz, the film also stars Lukas Gage, Megan Suri, Harvey Guillén, and Rupert Friend. Companion was released in U.S. theaters by Warner Bros. Pictures on January 31, and earned $36.7 million against a $10 million budget.

The story centers on Iris, who, after a traumatic encounter with Sergey at the cabin, must navigate a nightmarish scenario while dealing with both human and artificial threats. Chris Evangelista of /Film praised the film, giving it a nine out of ten and calling it “the first great film of 2025,” highlighting Thatcher and Quaid’s performances.

Kevin Maher of The Times gave it three out of five stars, writing that it is “essentially a ‘robot girlfriend’ movie… but one that begins on astonishingly strong form.”

Critics generally responded positively. On Rotten Tomatoes, 93% of 258 reviews were favorable, with an average rating of 7.5/10. The site’s consensus reads, “A fiendishly clever contraption that doesn’t rest on the laurels of its twists, Companion thrillingly puts the demented into domestic bliss.”

Metacritic gave the film a score of 70 out of 100, indicating “generally favorable” reviews. Audiences also responded well, giving it a CinemaScore grade of B+ and a PostTrak score of four out of five stars.

Some reviews were more critical. Benjamin Lee of The Guardian rated it two out of five, saying “The film is more sleekly made than it is thoughtfully written… leaving things on a so-what shrug.” The A.V. Club’s Jesse Hassenger gave it a C+, arguing that “Companion’s observations about relationship power dynamics are mostly just Comedy Ex Machina with the faintest hint of Her.”

Overall, Companion has drawn attention for its mix of suspense, sci-fi, and social commentary on AI, making it one of the standout genre films of 2025.
