‘Chainsaw Man: The Movie – Reze Arc’ Breaks Box Office Records and Dominates Rotten Tomatoes Scores
Anime continues to dominate the big screen as Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc takes the top spot at the domestic box office.
The R-rated film opened strongly with an estimated $8.5 million from Friday and preview screenings across 3,003 theaters, setting it up for a projected $15.5 million opening weekend.
The movie, available in both subtitled and dubbed versions, also benefited from screenings in IMAX and other premium formats that helped boost its numbers.
With this performance, the film sits ahead of new releases like Deliver Me From Nowhere, the Bruce Springsteen biopic, and the romantic drama Regretting You, adapted from Colleen Hoover’s novel.
Crunchyroll and Sony Pictures continue to see strong box office returns from anime films. Just last month, they saw massive success with Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba – The Movie: Infinity Castle, which earned more than $70 million in its opening weekend.
While Chainsaw Man may not reach those same heights, its ability to outperform major Hollywood titles highlights how much audiences have embraced anime in theaters in recent years.
Directed by Tatsuya Yoshihara and written by Hiroshi Seko, the film adapts the “Reze Arc” from Tatsuki Fujimoto’s hit manga series.
Produced by MAPPA, it continues the story from the anime’s first season, covering events from the fifth and sixth volumes of the manga. The movie was released in Japan on September 19, and later rolled out worldwide through Crunchyroll and Sony Pictures from late September through October.
Globally, Chainsaw Man – The Movie: Reze Arc has already grossed $77 million, proving its strong international appeal. Critics have also praised the film for its stunning animation, gripping action, and emotional storytelling. It currently holds a 96% score on Rotten Tomatoes based on 25 reviews, with audiences giving it an even higher 99% rating from over 1,000 verified viewers.
Richard Eisenbeis of Anime News Network gave the movie an A, calling it a must-watch for its visuals, music, and the touching love story between Denji and Reze. IndieWire’s Wilson Chapman also gave it high marks with a B+ review, writing that the film stands out as “one of the best anime TV adaptations in recent years” and describing its emotional impact as “potent enough to make you cry.”
